    Hello,

I have 2 double kayaks to sell, both great boats in very good condition, though I did not advertise them in Feb/March.  Please let me know if you want to follow up!

    Hi Randy,

I contacted my local S&R and got this response:

    Good afternoon Heather,

Thank you for your kind offer of the flares.

Unfortunately our safety protocols dictate that we cannot utilize expired equipment.

Thank you again for contacting search and rescue and your consideration.

    Hi Henry,

Over the years we have a few presentations by the Coast Guard and we have been warned that shooting flares off when it’s not an emergency can get you in a lot of trouble, for good reason. I would like to find a proper, reliable solution that all club members can use now that the Coast Guard doesn’t take them anymore. Coast Guard (rightly) commands us to buy and carry flares but then doesn’t provide us with an easy way to get rid of them. It’s a conundrum. The RCMP in Maple Ridge, where I live, will take them and they said that the fire department also does but I heard from another club member that when she asked at the N Van Fire Dept, they wouldn’t take them. I’m going to go to my local fire dept and check.

I also checked with the local Search and Rescue, as Randy Chatterjee suggested, and their reply was that training protocols prohibit the use of expired supplies. I will post this again with Randy’s response.

Around mid Feb. or March,  someone advertised a double kayak for sale. Wondering if it is still for sale? I am back in the country and would now be able to see it. Thanks.

    Hi There,
My name is Bob Putnam, co-owner of Deep Cove Kayak, Coast Outdoors. Bram from Coast Outdoors provided me with your contact info.

I was approached by Jessi Harewicz, safety@vowsa.bc.ca from Vancouver Open Water Swimming Association.

She is organizing a 10 km swim event at Jericho Beach and is looking for some experienced kayakers to act as safety guides for swimmers. About 10 – 20 paddlers. I thought this might be a good fit for some SKABC members. My impression is that she is very organized and will put on a good event. She mentioned there could be a stipend for paddlers, or donation to the club.

Please let me know if SKABC is interested in getting involved. see details below

    Regards
    Bob

Hi Heather, I dispose expired flares on Canada Day. They are no different than the fireworks that are being ignited.

SKABC Members, I have some news.

The Coast Mountain Know Before You Buy event on May 10th is a go.

    • You can still sign up.
    • The 2nd hour “social and shopping” is now open to SKABC members who would like to drop by between 8 and 9 pm.  We are asking for sign-up so we know how many to expect.  An event has been added under training for sign-up.

Remote First Aid – June 2-4:

    • We have reached our minimum of 8 members. Instructions for payment will go out by Friday to those who signed up.
    • SKABC members have until the end of Friday to register.  If we do not have the maximum number of 12, the course will be opened to cross club members.  So… If you are thinking of taking this course, don’t delay!

    Registrations are still available for:

    • Trip Leader Workshop on May 18 and 25 (6-9 pm each evening) (1 spot)
    • Weather (May 27/28 – overnight to Newcastle Island) (1 spot)
    • Rolling Clinic (June 4) (4 spots)
    • Boat Handling and Rescues (June10 & 11 at Sasamat Lake) (1 spot)
    • Rescue and Rolling Practice (June 25) (6 spots)

The other great outlet for expired safety gear is your local Search and Rescue team.  They train on safe flare use every year and prefer to use expired ones

I finally found out where to take expired flares. I decided to ask the local RCMP and found out that, yes, they take them and so does the Fire Dept. I was also told that there’s a Marine Safety facility in Delta that accepts them. I’m not sure about the VPD because I live tin the burbs.
