Hello Mike,

The information about boat length and kayaks is only provided after you complete the registration process and pay. It is on the receipt. Admittedly, a strange process. Here is what the receipt states:

“Up to 10 individuals can bring their own kayaks to practice skills in an indoor pool. Individuals to supply and use their own equipment kayak or canoe (Must be under 15 feet in length), helmet, PFD, paddle and any other equipment they will use. Safety gear must be used when in the pool.

This is a self-directed activity. All participants will maintain a safe distance from other kayaks, and use all due care. Please note that the pool deck is a wet environment and carrying heavy items on the pool deck may result in slipping and possible injury. Also note that impact with other kayakers, the pool perimeter walls or other fixtures within the pool area can result in injury or damage to personal equipment. Helmets must be worn at all times while in the pool basin area.”

Where is the notice you’re referring to? I don’t see anything about it online. Before COVID we’d go without helmets and with sea kayaks over 15 feet.

Hello Cynthia,

I have been to the Lord Byng pool kayak session three times since the new rules were put in place. The rule about helmets has not been enforced. Some participants wear one but others do not. There have not been any boats longer than 15 ft. but I don’t know whether that is because the rule has been enforced or because nobody has brought one.

Hi Cynthia,

It would be best to phone. I used to go with my 18 ft boat but that was years ago. No helmets were required, but it could get rather hectic when all the little ww boats were there doing their stunts and they may have had an incident.

The only trouble you will run into is that they might not let you in!

They used to allow a max of 15 boats so you had to get there early. Things have obviously changed. No harm in wearing a helmet. You need one for the currents course and playing in rocks anyway.

Could anyone who has done practice at Lord Byng pool please let me know how strict they are on requirements. Their notice says you need to have helmets and a maximum of a 15 foot boat. Mine is 19 feet and I have no helmet. Do you think I will run into trouble? Many thanks for your reply.

SKABC’s Annual Spring Fling is a great way to start the paddling season. Traditionally we have just taken leisurely trips up Indian Arm and then partied at Cates Park.

However, how long will we be able to paddle in this area? The TMX pipeline, being built now, ends just across from Cates park.  This will result in a seven fold increase in oil tanker traffic, which significantly increases the risk of an oil spill. Not to mention traffic and the impact on Climate Change. This year there is an event to increase public awareness at the same time as our Spring Fling. We can participate in both.

We will meet with everyone at Cates Park but I will lead a trip going west on the inlet and then across and down to the TMX site. We will be part of ‘Hug the Mountain’.  See https://hugthemountain.ca/ for more info on all the things they are doing. We will return to Cates park in time for Pizza with the rest of SKABC.

My insurance agent says they can no longer find coverage for my boats stored at Jericho Sailing Centre.  Does anyone have an insurer who is covering their boats stored at a kayak centre like Jericho?

Yes, Paul, I’ve used Sunset Marina many times, but I’m getting tired of the poor ramp angle which makes it hard to get my boat back on its trailer straight, although at least they have put back in place the side float/dock which usually get pulled out of service for the winter.  Also, they increased their day rate to $40 – ouch!

Still, after the 18 NM of rough water (well at least 6 NM of it was rough) on the way back to Richmond last time, I’ll probably just continue to use Sunset in future, unless all is calm (rare).

On February 15, Karin, Thom and Sue assisted Nick in unloading and stacking lumber that will eventually be used for 4 tent platforms at Apodaca Provincial Park.  A BC Parks grant provided SKABC with the money for these platforms.  BC Parks also plan to install a toilet at this location.  More help will be needed at a later date when the wood will be transported to the site and construction begins.

April 9/22 is our second ‘paddle and pull’ event to work on invasive ivy in Belcarra Regional Park. We need 2 more paddlers (or you could hike in) to make this trip worthwhile for the effort needed to put it on by the Metro Parks team. For example, they complete an avian check prior to choosing our work site. We will work in a defined area near Admiralty Point and our impact is visible and rewarding. Please let me know by Sunday eve if you can join us.
