I asked for 1 or 2 flares because I thought there would be high demand.   But seeing little so far, I’d like to revised my request, now asking for up to 6 flares depending on demand.

For those who have responded that they want a few flares – I don’t have them yet. When I know how many people and how many flares, I will notify the person responsible from the sailing club, and I will pick them up from him. Then we’ll decide how I will get them to you. It would be helpful if everyone could specify how many you want; they come in bags of 6, but we can break up the bags if necessary.

The weather forecast looks good for Thu. I want to go via very small power boat to the member’s private cabin, that is available for SKABC member use, to complete the hearth on which the wood stove sits and connect the chimney. This is mostly a one-person task, but for safety reasons it is better for 2 to be on site.  The old chimney and stove were removed for fire safety reasons. The new stove should make the cabin usable year-round.

Another job that can be done close near the cabin is to try to clean and prepare an existing unused water storage tank and connect plastic pipes so that it fills from the adjacent stream (permit already granted). This will provide a 1000 L water reserve for dry periods, which could be treated or boiled for drinking or used for fire control in an emergency.  Other tasks (there are many) could be to locate and buck downed timber for firewood, then stack it and .

So I’m looking for a hardy person who could figure out and complete these tasks without much supervision.

I got no response when I proposed an overnight stay,  so I’m re-casting this as a day trip  instead. Typically, I launch my boat at McDonald Ramp in Richmond but could pick up a helper in W Van e.g. Sunset Marina or Caulfeild Cove or similar.  This will be a full day.

I guess that threshold depends on how long you will be immersed, which will vary from a few minutes to many hours if you are unfortunate enough to fall into the water miles from shore and lose contact with your boat to high winds, and no-one notices, as has happened all too often.

There are tables compiled that relate time immersed at a specific water temperature to loss of consciousness & death but I haven’t accessed them recently. (As I understand, some of the early work was highly unethical Nazi experimentation on unwilling concentration camp captives, so is uncited in the literature).

Mike’s advice seems spot on!  Don’t bother to work out if you don’t actually need thermal protection around here – normally you need it!

Yes I took mine to Mustang Survival in Burnaby but call ahead to confirm they will accept them. The Richmond Fire Department pointed me to Mustang. The Jericho Sailing Centre is also organizing a collection on May 14th with Steveston Marine. From the March JSC Newsletter In The Wind:

“Many of you who carry flares on your vessel know that disposing of stale dated flares can be a frustrating chore. Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons (CPS) has partnered with CIL to help address this issue. CPS will be collecting old flares free of charge at Steveston Marine and Hardware (at both Richmond and Kits locations) Saturday May 14th. CPS will then organize and box them up properly for disposal by CIL.”

Replying to Mike – For those paddlers who paddle mostly in remote locations, they might want non-expired flares, but for those of us who paddle mostly in more populated areas, like myself, I don’t feel I need brand-new flares. My understanding and experience is that recently-expired ones normally work well. I’m only offering them to people who want them.

I’m confused as to why anyone would want expired flares. Isn’t it unsafe? I turn mine in when they expire.

I am a member of a sailing co-op and our 6 sailboats are having their sets of emergency hand-held flares replaced this year since they are 4 years old and expiring. So we have 30 of these barely-expired flares to hand off to any SKABC members who would like some, for free.
