What is the current camping situation at Apodaca? I’m not intending on camping there, but doing a big solo of the Sound and documenting emergency overnight locations. Is there a safe place to bring up the kayak? Some relatively flat areas above high tide to pitch a tent? Thanks kindly. The BC Marine Trail states the following:

Camp Comments
Undeveloped. Park Master Plan recognizes occasional camping use, with intent to develop 6 tent sites. Several suitably level mossy benches high above beach. New access trail (2021) up steep bank near creek steers users away from sensitive bluffs.

I also have the SH HX870. I did a good chunk if research and it’s one of the better options and is the predecessor of the HX860 I believe which was also a fan favorite. Make sure you get certified though for a VHS as you need a MMSI number to make us of DSC funtionality.

The one I have, Standard Horizon HX870, had really good reviews and I have heard from others that it is one of the better choices. It has the one button emergency call and Digital Select Calling plus features like way points and coordinates you can input. Mine is waterproof, floats and has a flashing beacon to find it in the dark if dropped in the water. (Beacon automatically engages when submerged.)

THIRD – Are you signed up for the May 7 Spring Fling? You could deliver HARD COPIES OF PHOTOS to Sue at the Spring Fling dinner. These will be assembled and displayed on memory boards at our 2023 in-person celebration.

Our team needs to start collecting these items NOW! Please help!

Sorry – we adjusted the dates once already, James, so I don’t want to repeat that. It would be possible for an additional paddler to join up with us on Mon am by taking the ferry to Otter Bay Pender I or Tues at Fulford Hbr or Wed at Swartz Bay. We could meet the ferry, depending on timing.

I’ve been there twice since it reopened. They don’t appear to enforce the helmet rule and I have not seen a boat longer than 15 feet there so as Philip said not sure if they will enforce it.

We went about a month ago. Called ahead and asked if they allowed 19ft and they said no:(

I brought my 14ft and we took turns. We brought helmets but never used them. No comments from the staff.

Click Locations (left panel), and select “Lord Byng Pool”. The attached page should appear.

In the “Name” column, click “Lord Byng Pool – Kayak paddle and practice” and the information should appear.

Thanks Philip. Can you share a link? I don’t see an option on the City of Vancouver page for Lord Byng and on the Calendar page I get:

“We’re sorry, but online registration is not allowed for this activity. Please contact us during regular business hours for registration information.”

Correction.

The same information about kayak length and helmets can also be found by go to the list of kayak sessions at Byng pool and clicking on the hyperlink for the specific session, at the start of the registration process.
