You should mention where you live, in case someone can help you out. We keep our Cetus (MV) in the basement where there’s plenty of room.
Lynn MalbeufI have just gone through this in the condo that I purchased in December. I requested, but the strata would not allow a free standing Kayak storage nor could I mount anything on the wall. They do allow boats on trailers, so I found a small (4’x8′) trailer that is perfect for my two 14.5′ Delta kayaks. The trailer is new (boxed, needing to be assembled) for $760.00. My friend assembled it for me and it is perfect! The unique feature about it for me is that it folds in 1/2 and stands upright against the back wall of my parking spot when not in use. I purchased it from JSE Equipment in Mission. Hope this helps!
Pam ProctorHello to any who read the post. New to the association. Moved very recently for work from Saskatchewan and bring years of lake kayaking/backcountry camping, some whitewater I. Thrilled to have brought my beautiful P&H Cetus LV to use in the actual sea! Right now I rent a townhouse with a garage so I can store it, but it’s a short term lease.
As I look for more permanent housing I am struggling to find storage options. None of the marine areas have room; townhouses are pricey for someone who just took a hit from a slow SK housing market, unless I move prohibitively far out. I can’t be the only one in the same, er, boat.
Do condo properties with underground parking to allow storage of a kayak? On a rack, on the wall, or in a second parking stall? I’ve read some strata docs and some allow ‘licensed trailers’ in the underground parkade – has anyone used this loophole? I’ll gladly buy one to store my kayak on.
Unfortunately, I’ve had no luck trying to reach out to condo boards (contact info not accessible to random buyers) quickly enough not to miss out on the bidding. And damn it I’m not giving up this boat!
Any tips, tricks, suggestions … I’m open!
I look forward to meeting a few of you as I settle in!

Personal trips not officially sponsored by SKABC #13585Nick HeathFollowing recent success at Zorro Bay and Thornbrough Pt we plan to install the remaining 4 food cache boxes on Tues and/or Wed, so I’m seeking crew(s) for either or both days. Some of us will stay overnight at one of the sites while others may choose to return home, spending either one or two days on task. I can use the skiff as a taxi to/from Porteau or Squamish, as needed. We’ll start each day early to take advantage of light wind conditions. Suggested meeting time at Porteau Cv is 7 am.
I’m thinking this could be 2 separate crews, but that means 2 sets of tools, taking more organization, but still feasible.
Pl let me know if you are able to help and, if so, for which day(s).
The work is likely to be in the shade, digging holes, mixing small batches of concrete, fetching gravel and pebbles in pails and other fairly straightforward site work. Work gloves needed, sturdy shoes, too. The heaviest work is actually loading and unloading the boat. Wading needed for that – so bring 2 sets of footwear. This is an open boat, subject to lots of spray. Put your gear in dry bags to protect it. Bring and wear your pfd.
I won’t be replying very soon because I’m off camping for a few days, but will definitely confirm arrangements on Sun ev or Mon am.

Personal trips not officially sponsored by SKABC #13574Nick HeathThis morning, four cheery SKABCers delivered the 6 steel tool boxes (aka bear-proof food caches) to 6 widely-spaced Howe Sound sites. Thanks v much to Reed, Randy and Darlene. Now comes the installation so bruin can’t roll them around and play silly billies with them! I’m planning to go out Sunday for the day and try to get one finished as a test for the correct technique. I would like one volunteer, please. Full day with early start but we might return quite early too, due to Howe Sd’s summer weather pattern having set in (windy in the afternoon). Travel by skiff. Dress for immersion then for work in the shade or sun (with bugs, possibly). Bring lunch , water, work gloves. Work is digging, levelling maybe minor concrete work, etc. Some carrying of materials. Might be interested in an overnight stay Sunday night to work on an additional site. Nick 604 939 7222 membership1@skabc.org
Nick HeathA visitor from Germany will have completed his Inside Passage trip and is planning to have this boat available in Vancouver or if not sold will air freight it back home instead (at a cost of about $600, as I understand). So he will be looking for offers on a boat that cost over $4500 quite recently.
I have seen the boat and it is lovely and very light Lettman Nordstern, length 5,55m about 17 ft. Foot pump added. V capable kevlar sea kayak with drop down rudder concealed in stern. I expect it will be scratched somewhat after his trip. See http://www.lettmann.de/produkte/paddel/wildwasser/item/nordstern
(I can send the image – can’t seem to get this to display..)
The ideal is for him to sell it in Prince Rupert or Pt Hardy (unlikely) but he is planning to bring it back to Vancouver, so it most likely will be here about 20 Aug. He flies home 23 Aug. I am in touch with him occasionally via SMS.

Nick HeathI assisted a German paddler from YVR to Jericho where he is launching and paddling the coast to Pr Rupert. He is them taking the ferry back to Pt Hardy. He seems to have misunderstood the ferry routes and now finds no simple way to get himself and more to the point his kayak (it won’t fit on the bus) back to Nanaimo or Vancouver . His nice kevlar kayak came with him from Germany. He could sell it here or take it back home.
So in the period 16 -18 Aug are there any rides heading S from Pt Hardy? Suggestions? Trucking companies?
I can be go-between for now Nick Heath 604 939 7222 or membership1@skabc.org
Mick AllenFurther to our input into the Widgeon Marsh plan and likely all our other activities that are getting more known out there, I have been contacted about initial thoughts for reinstituting Thwaytes landing as a camping location for small beachable craft like canoes and kayaks.
This is no done deal, but is obviously on the planners minds . . . so I would encourage all to fill out the surveys mentioned by Inge with whatever perspective you may have – it’ll all help.
And who knows, in a year or two we might be asked for a little help to make it happen. I’m in!
AdminPlease take a look and complete the surveys from the City of Vancouver and the Metro Vancouver Regional district regarding water use and shore access. You can find it on News page.
Nick HeathProbably right, Reed. I can get a big box into the boat on dry land or off a dock with me and just 1 other lifter. If the boxes were at Porteau already (by truck) it could be a shuttle effort in less than 3 days. I can shuttle a receiving box lifter crew to a site first, then go load up on boxes and return to that same site, .. repeat until done..
Reed ClarkeWith three people, this looks like a three day job.
Each day starts with the two paddlers packing up their camp and getting ready for you to arrive. When you arrive, the two boxes are un-nestled and one, preferably the larger one, is taken off the boat. Then, the two paddlers get on your boat with the smaller box (is this possible?) and go to a second camp, where the box is off-loaded. You then ferry the two paddlers back to the first camp, where they kit up and paddle off to the next target camp.
What I’m ignoring in all this, is how you get the boxes into your boat in the first place.
Does this sound like the makings of a plan? Or, am I missing something?
Cheers, Reed
Nick HeathHi Reed and thks!
There are 2 sizes – big and not so big. The big ones are fairly heavy – maybe 35 kg. the others are considerably lighter.
The big ones won`t fit inside the Honda CRV.
Doing it as a campout could work well. My main concern so not knackering anyone, so I need enough help to lift them clear of the boat to the beach without dropping them in the saltchuck.
Currently I can carry 2 on the boat – a large and a small, nested, but they can’t be lifted readily like that. The smaller one has to be extracted first.
The boxes are the 48
and 36versions at this bottom of this pageThey go one each to Bain Ck, Tantalus Ldg, Islet View, Thornbrough Pt, Zorro Bay, Ramillies Channel but at each site I’m not sure where exactly to put them. RSTBC prefer them to be mounted on concrete pads, but the pumper hoses are not going to reach that far, so I am going to go with a more lightweight version on short concrete tube posts…
anyhow, the installations will likely be on different dates – job #1 is to get them out of my carport and onto each site!
nJune 26, 2017 at 8:54 am in reply to: Short Notice Paddles. Personal trips not officially sponsored by SKABC #13537Nick HeathI need to deliver 6 steel tool boxes for food caches to Howe Sd sites. I can carry 2 boxes per trip, but need help at each site to unload them. There is only enough room aboard the skiff for one other person, so I’m hoping for 2 others to paddle over to a site to meet me there and help unload. We could do only 2 boxes er day unless someone can offer a truck or van that could take all 4 additional boxes to Porteau/Squamish (2 are already aboard the skiff). Other options are to make mutiple boat trips to move the crew all by boat then unload the boxes. A second power boat would be another option..
Pl let me (Nick) know if this will work for you 604-939-7222 or membership1@skabc.org
