A group of kayakers in Manhattan had a collision with a ferry on August 30.

Nine clients of the Manhattan Kayak Company and one guide were paddling on the Hudson River when the collision occurred, leaving five of them injured. The New York Times reports that the owner of the Manhattan Kayak Company, Eric Stiller, says the guide saw the ferry and waved his paddle at the captain to try and alert him to their presence. The guide is reported to have suffered the most serious injuries.

When sharing waterways with larger vessels, being highly visible can reduce the chance of collision. It also makes it easier for rescuers to locate you, especially in low-visibility conditions kayakers know well, like foggy mornings or glaring sun. Follow these five expert tips for staying visible on the water and reduce your chances of dangerous encounters with other boats and vessels.

This article is a little misleading. The best way to avoid collision is to assume they can’t see you and act accordingly. Don’t assume a larger vessel will change course or stop for you, whether or not you technically have right of way.

meet in Snug Cove when the ferry gets in at 9:30 am. You can paddle from Whytecliffe or Horseshoe Bay or walk-on with wheels it drive-on or rent from Bowen Island Sea Kayaking right on the dock by the ferry.

paddle the southern scenic route to Bowen Bay and lunch. Transport back to Snug Cove can be arranged , probably $10-$15 / boat or you can paddle back. Ferry back to Horseshoe Bay is free.

Meet at 10 am at Barnett Marine Park in Burnaby for a 10:30 launch. We’ll paddle into Indian Arm and stop at Twin Islands for lunch. If there is time, we can paddle over to Deep Cove. Expect to make a leisurely day of it.

If you don’t want to cross any bridges, you can launch at Deep Cove or Strathcona Park and meet us partway.

Agree with Laura, as I’m just returning from there. Only thing I’d add is that Launching from Retreat Cove wharf is better done with singles. Tandem is problematic. Also watch for north westerlies that can make Trincomali adventurous.

Two spots come to mind. The Provincial Park is quite an easy launch site (with boat ramp and parking). Also, there is a gov’t wharf further up island that we have launched from. Past Retreat Cove, closer to the north end. It’s better when the tide is not too low so the ramp isn’t at so steep an angle. There is some parking there as well.

Hi paddlers,

Anybody interested in joining me to paddle from Horseshoe Bay around the south end of Bowen and on to Langdale this Sunday? You need wheels to roll back onto the ferry, you need to be ready to launch at 8 AM (no later) from the ramp to the left of the ferry dock in Horseshoe Bay and it’s about 15 nmiles. It’s a fun trip, sorry for the short notice. It looks like the weather will be cooler on Sunday with some cloud cover, some possible showers. Nothing to discourage our sorts.

I think Tony Clayton from Lions Bay, tclayton@telus.ca, will be back any day now but I also think if you contact Nick Heath, nheath@sfu.ca, who worked on the Howe Sound Marine Trails campsites that have just been established up into Howe Sound, you could get some really good info on where to paddle and hopefully some paddling partners.

Congratulations for making a break to the west coast. You won’t regret it (I know, it’s almost 40 years now for me).

Meet at Eagle Harbour in West Vancouver at 10 am for a 10:30 launch. Paddle to Bowen Island for a picnic on a beach at the north end so bring a lunch.

Must be comfortable on bumpy water and with some inflow winds on the way back. Bring immersion gear.
