Philip Kubik, who is one of our members, and two PIKA members are offering a Paddle Canada Level 1 course that might be of interest to some of you.  Details are below.  Please note that this is not a SKABC course.

Dates: May 27-28, 2023 plus 2 evening Zoom sessions

Location: Lower Mainland

Instructors: John Drent, Philip Kubik, and Doug Childress.

Fee: $140.00.

This Paddle Canada certified course teaches participants how to move beyond flatwater kayaking and into the sport of sea kayaking. A detailed description of the course may be viewed at:

Two 1-day sessions on the water plus 2 evening Zoom sessions are included. The on-water portion of the course will take place at a location in the Lower Mainland, which will be chosen to be reasonably convenient for the majority of participants. The dates of the 2 evening Zoom sessions will be selected
based on the availability of participants.

Prerequisites:
1. Paddle Canada Basic Kayak Skills certification or equivalent skill and knowledge, at the discretion of the course director.
2. Paddling skills and experience:
a. Five kayaking excursions (at least 2 or 3 hours each).
b. Ability to perform a wet exit.
c. Ability to perform an assisted rescue.

Participants must supply their own kayaking equipment, including a wetsuit or drysuit.

Hi everyone.

My advertised Level 1 Course is full – thank you – and it includes 3 SKABC members.  My problem now is there is one more person who would love to join the course but I would need an Asst. Instructor to allow this 7th person.

The course takes place April 29 / 30 (I know, short notice) at Vanier Park in Vancouver.  The instructor must have at minimum Paddle Canada Basic Instructor cert.  If you have this minimum cert, are available and interested in helping me out I would be very grateful.  Contact me directly at mgilbert1600@gmail.com or 778-835-0774.

I would be glad to pay for all your expenses plus or, if you are looking for a first mentorship to get to your Level 1 Instructor cert, I could offer that as well.

Registration for the April 29 Introduction to Rolling Clinic (9 am – noon) filled up quickly this morning.  Philip and Kevin and have kindly agreed to run and afternoon session.  So…. registration will open at 8 am Tuesday April 18th.  If you cannot attend that session, but want to be on the waitlist for the morning session, or the afternoon session if it fills up too, just send me an email asking to be on the waitlist. Please specific which session.

I’m sharing this announcement from BCMT:

Special Request for Volunteers: Port McNeill
Kingfisher Wilderness Adventures has contracted with Kwikwasut’inuxw Haxwa’mis First Nations (KHFN) to build 12 tent platforms, two outhouses, a covered kitchen area, installation of bear boxes, and a kayak storage area (maybe just logs!). The camp will be for public and commercial use. Many of the camps within the Broughtons are commercial-only so this is a change of direction.

Volunteers are needed during two main periods of time in May: May 8th to 12th and May 15th to 19th. It is also possible to assist on the Fox Group Islands from May 3rd to 5th on preparatory type work. While carpentry skills are welcome, basic construction experience is all that is needed (that is, holding a board or putting in a screw with a tool). Lumber is already pre-cut to length.

This is not a kayaking adventure. Volunteers will be transported from Port McNeill. Check with Andrew Jones about more details regarding transport, food and accommodation.

There might be the option of additional accommodation and meals at Echo Bay or people can camp/cook their own meals at the site. Andrew needs to firm up volunteers by April 22nd, approximately. The original posting for the 2023 Currrents course set April 30 as the registration open date for this course in July.  Some members noted this date and were waiting until the end of April to register.  Meanwhile, it became clear that due to limited ferry options it would be a good idea to allow people to register sooner and the registration date was moved forward to March 31.  Within days six people registered for the six spots available, leaving no space for those who were waiting in good faith for the original April 30 date before registering.

Given this confusion, and in the interests of fairness for all, we are reopening registration requests from 8 am Monday Apr 17 to 8 pm April 18.   All registration requests, including those already submitted, will be reviewed.  As is our policy, all requests to register are subject to approval by the training coordinator and the lead instructor.   If the number of “approved” registrations exceeds the course maximum, a lottery will be held and winners will be emailed with payment instructions so they can secure their spot.  Payment will be required within 48 hours, after which the next person in line will be invited to take the open spot.

We apologize for the confusion and feel that this is the fairest way to address this confusion.

NOTE: While the Training page of the website is continually updated and provides registration information, and announcements are made at the monthly meetings and in the newsletter, this experience has reinforced the need for SKABC to also communicate training posting and registration deadlines through the general forum, the communication channel for all members.

I am the training coordinator. You should have received an email from me kcunningham.unsw@gmail.com or training2@skabc.org when you registered for the Beginner’s Course. You have also now heard by Cynthia Materi, the lead instructor.

Unfortuneately the Boat Handling and Rescues course filled up in the last two days. But if you are interested in this or any other course that is full, just send me a note requesting to be on the waitlist.  A number of clinics and a first aid course are being added over the next week or two. They are noted on the course page, but details haven’t been posted. The general forum will be used to alert members when details are available and when registration will open. If you have any questions, feel free to email me directly.

PS – After the shoreline paddle the Spring Fling event is being held at Cates Park. Check out the website and register if you  would like to meet members.

Welcome Akhil! I see you signed up for the Beginners Course — that’s a great start. We’re having a Shoreline Paddle May 6 from Cates Park where kayak rentals are available. Also there is a New Member Welcome Paddle June 4 at Rocky Point — kayak rentals are available at that location as well. Looking forward to meeting you 🙂
