As I rather rashly wrote in the Grant Narrows entry on the BCMT map:
“Some (people) estimate 4-6 hrs later than Pt Atkinson or 2.5 – 4.5 hrs later than New Westminster depending on flow in Fraser.”
A rising tide at Sand Heads/Steveston slows the river flow, which the backs up the Pitt R and Pitt Lk. When the Fraser is in freshet (mid May- late June more or less) I assume this happens sooner than during lower flows, but I might be wrong about the timing. The level of Pitt Lk makes a difference, too, as already mentioned. I assume it is not so high this year, with a below average snow pack. Hence wading is more than likely.
June 9, 2024 at 8:14 pm in reply to: Looking to rent or borrow Passat double kayak aug 2024 – can reciprocate #24039Yekaterina YushmanovaHi Evan, yes a joint trip would be great! But I guess you will need to find another double to do that. Catch 22! If you want to grab our boat in August, send me a note at katyayushmanova@ gmail.com or 604-600-3738. We typically do the club trip to Newcastle for the Labour Day weekend that catches the tail of your planned trip, but surely we can coordinate.
Murray StevensHi,
Mercia taught me to roll among many other aspects of paddling back in the 90’s when I lived in Vancouver and Duncan BC. Since moving back to the prairies in 2000 I lost touch with her.
If anybody is in touch with Mercia please give my contact info to pass on to her.
Cheers,
Murray Stevens 306-361-4867
Helen ClementThank you kindly for your reply. I have it all taken care of now. Much appreciated!

If you are ever doing bigger trips and need more storage you can use our passat any time! I am hoping to take our two kidos on some overnights to Howe Sound this summer would be great to coordinate something!
Maureen BenzonOr if you already have the kayak and are just looking for a rack, phone Rack Attack and ask their advice.

Karin HartnerHi Helen
Coast Outdoors which is on Kevin’s list rents out kayaks right on the water in Deep Cove. The only problem there is that there are parking restrictions in Deep Cove. so you may have to drop off your gear and park some distance away from the beach.
Kevin AmosYou could try Dave Middleton as listed here.
Helen ClementUPDATE:
Apologies, I had originally made this post asking for kayak rental or assistance getting a kayak to Deep Cove. It is actually, Porteau Cove and not Deep Cove.
I am new to the club, first excursion is planned and I am very excited… except, I do not have the proper vehicle to transport a kayak to Porteau Cove on July 6. APOLOGIES, I had originally said Deep Cove.
Squamish Water Sports is able to transfer a kayak for me to Porteau Cove on July 6. I am delighted. In case anyone else needs to rent for this exciting day… SWS seems to be reasonable and able.
Thank you@
Helen Clement
Heather KirkI agree with Jonas. I live out in Maple Ridge. I add 3 hours from Deep Cove and it works as a fairly good approximation. I have often been up Widgeon during the dry times of year and not been able to make it to the campsite unless I wanted to trudge through the sludge but I have also been up there when the water level was so high we could paddle across Siwash Island. Of course the tides and the runoff of Pitt Lake affect Widgeon and it’s a bit difficult to predict but it’s still worth going to see the flora and the lovely birds and the occasional bear.

It is smaller than a Passat and holds less but very easy to manage for one adult with a kid. I would also be interested in connecting to do trips with kids together. We have a 9yo boy who longs for company.
