July 27, 2018 at 11:43 am in reply to: Short Notice Paddles. Personal trips not officially sponsored by SKABC #15446Ian Cohen- I plan to paddle out tomorrow evening for the fireworks, launching from Jericho sailing centre at about 8:00, in case anyone else wants to tag along. I have done this a few times and know what to expect. I’m new to this forum and not quite sure how it works, but if you are interested or have questions feel free to respond.

Oriana GraberA costume rental company I deal with is selling their wet and dry suits.
All sizes, weights, N/S or L/S and short styles as well as full body. All brands.
They have been used as rentals for films. As I need one, I was able to buy, and found out he wants to rid of it all. Oceaner is one of the brands. And Oceaner do alterations if needed. (From what i recall dealing with them)
He is selling for 100 a piece. But I am sure you can negoiate. It is based out of North Van near Bridge. New and used.
Contact Shawn at 604 356 1037 (owner out of town for a couple of weeks)
They are for personal use and NOT for resale. This is why I offered to post here. 🙂

A minimum of 3 others would be best. Experience in the wilderness is mandatory. If interested, please get in touch at 778 870 6043.
Oriana GraberHi, I am new too and also have found this. I rarely use one and don’t have one. (i paddle in good weather usually) but I do understand the need for one on a longer trip and will be buying one.
Also finding that I need a recent training in rescue, which I don’t have but hope to take a class soon to refresh with my new boat. So getting accepted in a group is challenging
It is harder to sign up for trips but as I have been told, you need more caution for kayaking and having a reliable participant is important.

Maureen BenzonHi Gord,
I agree with Karin. In summer, it is not always necessary, but you must confirm with the trip leader. If it is an informal group arranged through the bulletin board, you are responsible for yourself, but it is still a good idea to ask the coordinator what they think for the area. Most of our longer trips and all of our training require a wet or dry suit. It is worth investing in one.
🙂

Karin HartnerHi Gord
It would depend on the location of the paddle if I were leading a trip.
For example–Evenings in English Bay, the river or Deep Cove-no.
Howe Sound–yes–as it can blow up.
Karin
Gord LordHello,
I’m new to SKABC and interested in some of the weeknight or weekend day trips. I don’t have a wet suit or dry suit. Are those mandatory for the shorter summer trips? I believe I have all of the other safety gear.
Thanks.
July 22, 2018 at 6:55 pm in reply to: Short Notice Paddles. Personal trips not officially sponsored by SKABC #15419Ellen WoodOnce again, I’m planning to paddle from Jericho this Thursday evening, meeting at 5:30 for a 6:00 launch. The meeting place will be the roundabout at the end of Discovery Street in front of Jericho Sailing Centre
To be absolutely clear, I am not in any way leading this Paddle or taking any responsibility beyond making initial plans. I am not a SAKBC qualified trip leader, so this is simply an informal group of people getting together to go kayaking. I would however request that anyone coming with us follow the club policies with respect to safety equipment and immersion gear.
Please email me at ellen.w@me.com if you would like to join us.

Personal trips not officially sponsored by SKABC #15411Anna AnselmIn keeping with Stephen Tarrant’s posts for weekday evening paddles, Ellen Wood is proposing a Thursday evening paddle this week (July 19) meeting at 5:30 pm at the end of the parking lot next to Jericho Sailing Club, and on the water by 6:00 pm.
Weather permitting, the plan is to head west along the shoreline and see how far we get, turning around at 7:15 pm in order to arrive back at the launch point by 8:30 pm. If the group agrees and there is time, we might paddle a short distance out to check out the yellow buoy we saw 2 weeks ago that we surmised to be a seismic sensor.
To be absolutely clear, neither Ellen nor I is in any way leading this Paddle or taking any responsibility beyond making initial plans. Neither Ellen nor I is a SAKBC qualified trip leader, so this is simply an informal group of people getting together to go kayaking. We would however request that anyone coming with us follow the club policies with respect to safety equipment and immersion gear.
While the intention is to return by 8:30 while it is still daylight, it would be advisable to bring a petzel or other means of lighting your boat just in case Mother Nature has other ideas.
Please email ellen.w@me.com if you would like to join us.
Clark Perry-BaterHi Lorraine,
I’m interested in joining your group to the Thormanbies. I used to paddle out there quite often, but it’s been a few years now. I’m paddling in Desolation Sound right now (gorgeous weather!!😎), but I should be back home around mid-week before July 27. It’ll depend on how this trip goes, and how tired and sun-burnt I am!! 🌞
