    Hi Phyllis,

My name is Ted, I am excited to hear that you want to practice of this self rescue. I think it is awesome if there are someone to work with, if you are ok, please count me in. I am a strong swimmer, love waves, own a kayak, wet suit and enough gears. Let me know the time and location. I have time to do both, Friday after lunch and whole Saturday.

I have April 14th – 18th available to put on a 3 day Level 1 sea kayak course for club members.  Probably looking at April 15, 16 & 17 as the best dates.  Who would be interested?

Maximum number of students allowed is either a 1:6 or 2:8 instructor student ratio.  Minimum number of students required is 3.  Price per person would be $150.00.  You must have all the needed equipment (ie. kayak, paddle(s), PFD, whistle, pump, throw bag).  Course will be held at Jericho Beach, Vancouver.

Information about the course is as follows:

    Sea Kayak Level-1 Skills
Building on the information covered in Basic Skills, Level-1 is a two-day course that moves participants beyond flatwater kayaking and into the sport of sea kayaking. The course is conducted in slightly rougher water than Basic Kayak, aiming to develop the paddler’s comfort in class-1 waters. There is a strong focus on re-entry techniques as well as the skills required to safely plan and execute a day trip with friends (for example, navigation & route planning, weather interpretation, proper clothing/gear.)

    Prerequisites
Certification:Paddle Canada Basic Kayak skills certification or equivalent skill and knowledge at the discretion of the course director.
Paddling experience:Five kayaking excursions (2 or 3 hours) in class-0
Can execute a controlled wet exit in class-0 conditions.
Can perform a simple assisted re-entry in class-0 conditions.

I agreed to see if SKABC could help the Future of Howe Sd Society who are taking the lead on trying to clear some debris that has spread across various beaches as a result of storms breaking up docks and wrecking boats.  On the weekend of Apr 13/14 they will be picking up collected, bagged debris at Porteau Cv and Horseshoe Bay in a truck for disposal/recycling. They especially want to gather expanded polystyrene before it is pulverised into micro-sized  pellets.

The Society organizers think kayakers will be able to access areas like Anvil Is SW shore that others can’t easily reach. A similar notice will be sent out via BCMT channels.

My plan and motives are a bit different – remove from our 6 sites some garbage that we haven’t been able to remove so far and take it to Porteau Cv for disposal. If we have time, clean up other beaches nearby.

Safety will be paramount, so all needs to be well-organized and controlled.

Some volunteers could paddle, some could come in my open skiff. 1 day or 2 days – your choice. I’ll camp overnight at Zorro Bay or Porteau.

Dates Wed 10 April Thu 11 Apr . Contact Nick treasurer2_at_skabc.org

Registrations are now open for Spring Fling 2019!

This year’s event will be held on May 4, the first Saturday of the month. There are 5 separate day trips posted, of varying distances. Two groups will be launching from Deep Cove, and three groups from Cates Park.

Guests (non-club members) are welcome, however we cannot accommodate first time kayakers. Please co-ordinate your guest paddler’s qualifications with the trip leader(s) on the trip you are registering for.

Some groups have openings for co-leaders. If you would like to lead future club trips, this is a great opportunity to start on that path, working with an experienced trip leader. Having additional trip leaders will also allow those groups to accept more participants.

As always, wind and weather will be factors affecting paddling conditions. Please prepare gear, food, and water accordingly.

My plans for the weekend fell through and the weather and wind look great this weekend. I thought I would see if anyone else is able and willing to go for an overnight. I’d prefer to have someone with a couple of years experience and not beginners. Kayak camping experience essential, wet/dry suit, self rescue skills, and assisted rescue skills.

I actually have Monday off as well so could do two nights from Saturday (tomorrow anytime) or just early Sunday-Monday. Or just Saturday/Sunday too.

Email me and I’ll check in periodically through the evening.
