Is anyone planning to paddle to the fireworks from Jericho? I think I will do it this year. I plan to meet a friend on her paddle board around Kits. I think I will put in around 7-8pm.

Please be sure you are fully aware of what it entails as it isn’t for the faint of heart or for those without solid boat handling skills, especially if you plan to be at the front of the fireworks, as I do. Also, make sure you have an effective lighting system for front and back.

Find your local Search and Rescue team. North Shore?

Donate the flares to them. They do annual training with flares, using their expired ones, so that new members know how to use them safely.  They can always use more.

My experience with such used flares is that they still work fine, for as much as 10 years after expiry.

SKABC has scheduled kayak rolling clinics on the mornings of Sept. 10 & Sept. 17. The Sept. 10 clinic is focussed on those with little or no rolling experience. The Sept. 17 clinic is focussed on those with some experience, including those who attended the first clinic. For both clinics, participants must be comfortable with capsizing and wet exits. In response to Helen’s question, SKABC had a set of charts for a few years. It was not a complete set, nor up to date, but covered many key areas and the detailed catalogue was displayed on our web site. Members could request a chart and pick it up at the following monthly meeting. However, there was nowhere suitable for storing them and the then Exec decided that they should be sold, which was done. t seems a shame to me that we couldn’t manage these charts better as a service to members.

If any member wants an (older) electronic raster chart I can probably find the right one for you  and send it along – just ask. There is free s/w available for planning, setting routes, uploading GPS tracks etc and printing them. I can also print to a .pdf document if that could be useful, but these will not print easily as full size – best limited to a smallish area.

If local public facilities are full to capacity, it is worth writing to your municipal council to raise your concerns and lobby for some additional space. All other sports recreation groups already do this  – tennis, pickleball, soccer, hockey, diving etc.

If you think SKABC should do this on behalf of our members, first we’ll need some data – who is full and when do they expect to have space for kayak storage. How many craft do they accommodate. Does it have gear lockers and a change area?

Casual observation suggests to me that folks in smaller communities are much better served with small-scale recreation facilities than we are here in Metro.

Hello, I’m posting this in the same forum because I’m in the same situation as Sarah last year. I just moved to an apartment in Port Moody and I’m urgently looking for storage for my kayak. Every sailing and kayak club seems to be full and waiting lists packed at seams, which is very fascinating. Does anyone have extra space in their backyard near Port Moody? I don’t have an issue with paying for the space like at any other kayak/sailing club. Thanks.

I’m hoping to attend to “show the flag” for SKABC /BCMT and wonder if anyone else from the Metro Vancouver area is travelling to Squamish for this. It might be ok to ride share if we hang our heads out the car windows with goggles on (lots of bugs this year, I’m finding!).
