Solar chargers….FRUSTRATING. Trying to find a reasonably priced solar charger for longer kayak trips has been frustrating. I love the idea but really want to carry the charger on my deck when I am out, moving from one site to the next. I tried this and discovered that “Water proof” does not mean “waterproof”, even when they advertise for outdoor use.
Richard MerchantNo comment about solar rechargers for this type of application. I would guess that would be necessary for longer trips… And the technology is improving all the time.
Anyone have any advice about this option?

Definitely choose a radio that accepts an optional AA battery tray if you have that option!
Eg for this current model the Amazon.ca blurb says

You’re better to buy both at the same time from someplace like Steveston Marine because I don’t think Amazon bothers to sell the bits and pieces but I could be wrong. also this might be available for some models but not others. This stuff usually is discounted at Boat Show time in Feb.
The Li-ion batteries are however getting more compact all the time and maybe some of the models can no longer offer bulky AA packs which need to generate around 7 or 8 V to work so that means 6 AA batteries – a bigger pack than the Li-ion.
Radios are notorious for working fine until you actually need them so it is not redundant to carry a backup power pack.
In addition, I would personally recommend a PLB for more on-water security.

I have both a Standard Horizon (7yo) and a Uniden (4yo) hand held radios. They both are Lithium Ion rechargeable but each also came with an additional battery pack that accepts AA batteries. I use the rechargeable primarily but always carry the battery pack as backup. Both of my radios have an amazing rechargeable battery life on standby or scanning mode .
If the battery pack does not come with the radio you might be able to purchase it separately from the manufacturer.

I bought the Cobra HH600. I comes with a battery tray that takes AA batteries. I pack the tray and AA batteries in a waterproof bag, and put it away safe only to be used in an emergency.
Then I use my radio, GPS, etc when paddling without as much worry about running out of battery when I need it.
Former MemberGood Morning: As a new member I have read previous discussions on handhelds. Very good info…..thanks for that! This may be a stupid question, but all of the radios I have researched, all have Li. ion rechargeable batteries. None of the brands I have seen show the use of “normal” AAA batteries or equivalent. Am I looking at the wrong radios?

Former MemberI have been using greenland style paddles for about three years now. Speaking only for myself, part of my water dripping issue was my lack of proper technique. I was still using the higher angle, euro blade paddling technique. When I lowered the angle of the paddle to the water, the dripping was substantially less. I still use drip rings, which almost get rid of all the remaining dripping.

Our SKABC Christmas Party on December 3rd is fast approaching and the social committee is working on delivering a memorable event. This is always a communal effort and as such relies on help from members. This is a great way to contribute and also meet other members and have fun!
Some ways to help:
– cooking a turkey, a salmon or a vegetarian protein main course (you will be reimbursed for the cost of the food)
– helping to decorate and set up (3:30pm at the hall)
– bring decorations, trees, streamers, table runners etc. (3:30pm at the hall)
– bring in a Christmas tree & simple decorations and help to decorate it (3:30pm at the hall)
– greet people at the door and have them fill out name tags and direct people (4:45pm at hall)
– make inexpensive center pieces or table runners and/or…
– buy mini poinsettias (will be reimbursed)
– provide music: easy listening during dinner, and perhaps dancing afterwards NOTE: no bluetooth and spotty wifi.
– helping to tear down and clean up at 10:00 – 10:30pm (MUST be fully done and out by 11 when hall gets locked)
– provide a short slide show of a trip (10min max)

Former MemberRm performance kayak in like new condition, I bought it brand new in the spring 2022 and used it only for light day touring, its a playful and fast kayak for its lenght. Unfortunately I have to let it go because of some financial commitments.
