Dear BC Marine Trails Community,
We are excited to announce that Chief John Powell of the the Mamalilakulla First Nation will be presenting on their recent establishment of the Gwaxdlala/Nalaxdlala (Lull Bay/Hoeya Sound) Indigenous protected and conserved area (IPCA). This presentation is a wonderful opportunity for us to learn about the importance of Indigenous protected areas and the work being done to protect and conserve these areas for future generations.

The Gwaxdlala/Nalaxdlala IPCA is a beautiful and significant part of the coastal mainland landscape near the northern tip of Vancouver Island. The area encompasses over 10,416 hectares of land and sea and is home to critical estuaries, salmon bearing streams and an important coral reef and sponge habitat. This area has been a part of the traditional territory of the Mamalilakulla people for countless generations and holds great cultural and spiritual significance to the community.

Chief Powell’s presentation will provide us with valuable insights into the creation of this protected area and the steps taken to ensure that it is managed in a way that is consistent with the values and priorities of the Mamalilakulla people. He will share with us the challenges that were overcome during the establishment of this area and the benefits that it brings to the community and the wider region.

This presentation is a unique opportunity for us to learn from and engage with Indigenous leaders who are at the forefront of conservation efforts. It is a chance for us to learn about the importance of Indigenous-led conservation initiatives and the positive impacts that they can have on both the environment and Indigenous communities.

We encourage all members of the BC Marine Trails community to attend this presentation and learn more about the Gwaxdlala/Nalaxdlala Indigenous protected and conserved area. This is a chance for us to deepen our understanding of the cultural and ecological significance of this area and to show our support for the efforts being made to protect and conserve it.

The presentation will take place on March 28 @ 7:00 pm and will be held virtually on  Zoom. Open to all. You can register in advance here. We look forward to seeing you there.

My long legs& touchy back have said ‘enough! Look no further for that special deal. Just a thank you for the suggestions and ideas regarding parking and such for my June trip. This is a bucket list trip for this prairie kayaker! Hotels are booked, ferries and parking are booked. Courtesy reminder that next Saturday, March 18th we are hiking in to remove invasive ivy. See the website (trips) for details and to add your name!

Hiking in:  We will meet in the picnic area of Belcarra Park and hike in to Admiralty Point (about 2.5km). Note that parking is free for this trip. Sam Cousins, Natural Resource Management Technician, will guide us in the work of removing invasive species (mostly English ivy) for about 2-3hrs including a lunch break. This is considered a priority project area by Metro Vancouver Regional Parks.

Your input will inform the development of guiding principles and concept options for the proposed regional park. The results from the first phase of engagement will be publically available on Metro Vancouver’s website.

I took part in the session on 1 Mar. There was some NIMBY representation from local interests (e.g ferries will be too crowded, roads will be over-run, we’ll need a permit to walk on our local trails etc). There were other interest groups too – mainly conservation groups. Most responses from the planners were – “we’re in the early stages of planning.”

The main issue re: paddle-in is whether there is a suitable landing. I’m unsure and it seems they haven’t yet checked. So I offered to visit the site with a planner to determine what is feasible. We’ll see if they respond.

If any member wants to accompany us (assuming it happens) pl let me know.

I have already signed up for the March 9 Webinar. I will voice comments under the banner of SKABC. As I see it SKABC concerns are sheltered beach landing site (this maybe an issue), camping location close by, supervised camping authority, freash water, toilets and level tent sites. If there are any other concerns please pass then on to me.
