Good morning
I have seen several of you with a fibreglass repair “stick” that was applied by kneading two materials together. I thought it came from MEC but can’t find it on their website now. Can anyone tell me where you bought this?
Second question: with a Kevlar boat, do i need a different repair compound for my repair kit?
Thanks all you technical experts out there!
Maureen BenzonThis course was full, but we now have 2 openings. If you have been sitting on the fence, check the pre-requisites, and think about joining us for 3 days in the gulf islands!
Hugh DaviesA follow up: I just purchased a Standard Horizon 870 GPS-enabled (DSC) handheld from Amazon for $215 USD that seems to be the cheapest I have seen anywhere since I started looking. Also gives free delivery if you can ship it to US (we use http://www.ship2blaine.com, it’s “pay-what-you-think-its-worth” and easy to organize).

Simone and I will be launching at 10 am from the Barnet Marine Park for a few hours paddling. Direction to be determined by the wind and the waves. Nick HeathI concur. Just avoid anything too heavy or cumbersome or that could absorb loads of water. I have a Petzl rock climbing/mountaineering helmet that (to me anyway) seems superior to the paddling helmets I have seen, They basically all do the same job. Even a cheap bike or hockey helmet should work well enough if the harness is properly adjusted, so the helmet can’t fall off from an impact (unlike those used in the NHL that seem to fall off at the first punch!).

Maureen BenzonHi Susan,
This enquiry should have been sent directly to the instructors. Please confirm with them as they have the final say, but generally any helmet should be OK – if you are willing to subject your helmet to sea water.
Maureen
Susan Servos-SeptIf planning to just wear a helmet one time for a course, wondering if one can wear a helmet made for skateboarding or other. OR is it necessary to have a helmet made just for kayaking? Thanks

Miranda MallinsonWow! So much helpful information!! Thank you!! So much to learn and know!!
Karin, I’ve gone into my profile and made my contact info visible. 😀
Karin HartnerHi Miranda–couldn’t find an email for you so I’ll paste the info here:
Hello Ms. Hartner,
Human-powered vessels are prohibited in the First and Second Narrows.
There are some sections of the Harbour where human powered vessels are permitted.
Please refer to the Port Metro Vancouver Harbour Operations Manual for details:
http://www.portmetrovancouver.com/Libraries/PORT_USERS_Marine_Operations/Harbour_Operations_Manual_Practices_and_Procedures_for_the_Vancouver_Fraser_Port_Authority_1.sflb.ashx
6.4.2.1 Narrows
Tide and wind conditions may cause turbulent seas in both Narrows. Caution should be exercised. Only adequately powered craft may pass through either Narrows. No craft under sail or oars may transit either Narrows.Karin HartnerMiranda, besides this being challenging water, you are not allowed by law to paddle in the harbour which is officially between the two bridges. Only a small area in Coal Harbour near the Rowing Club is exempt. I’ll forward you the reference.
Karin
