If planning to just wear a helmet one time for a course, wondering if one can wear a helmet made for skateboarding or other.    OR     is it necessary to have a helmet made just for kayaking? Thanks

I concur.  Just avoid anything too heavy or cumbersome or that could absorb loads  of water. I have a Petzl rock climbing/mountaineering helmet that (to me anyway) seems superior to the paddling helmets I have seen, They basically all do the same job.  Even a cheap bike or hockey  helmet should work well enough if the harness is properly adjusted, so the helmet can’t fall off from an impact (unlike those used  in the NHL that seem to fall off at the first punch!).

    Hi Susan,

This enquiry should have been sent directly to the instructors. Please confirm with them as they have the final say, but generally any helmet should be OK – if you are willing to subject your helmet to sea water.
