    Hi Everyone,

I took the SKABC Greenland Paddle Carving course last year and carved my own paddle. Although at the time I wasn’t really planning to use it much, I was mainly curious and interested in making one. I now use it a great deal; it competes with my favourite carbon fiber euro paddle – turns out I love this paddle! I used it shortly after I made it, again just from a curiosity stand point and discovered what a great paddle it is. It’s light, easy on the shoulders and very efficient and it smells wonderful.

In recent trips, I have had several people ask me if they could try it and many have been intrigued and/or pleased with the feel. I have spoken to Richard Jensen who instructs the SKABC Greenland Paddle Carving course about scheduling another course. Richard is happy to instruct another session however; this particular course requires a different type of planning. The cedar used to carve the paddles has to be purchased in advance to ensure it is dry and to do the basic cuts required to ensure most of us can get the paddle completed or nearly completed in this one-day course.

If you are interested in taking the SKABC Greenland Paddle Carving course, please let me know by August 11th by emailing me at chantalethier@msn.com so we can determine when the course would take place – likely in September, buy the wood and get the process started. Once we know that we have enough interest, I will be in touch and will publish the course posting on the website so that you may register. The course lasts one day and the cost is $60; the tools required to carve your paddle is a low angle block plane. We will try to have a few on hands but probably won’t have enough for everyone (depending on the number of participants).

    Cheers,

    Chantal

It is going to be a gorgeous weekend again and time for a kayak trip! One of my kayak friends and I are planning to go to Prevost Island this weekend and we like to invite a small group to join us.

The plan is to wheel on to the 4:35pm ferry from Tsawwassen to Village Bay (Mayne Island). Meet at 3pm at the passenger drop-off zone. We can street park away from the ferry terminal and only leave one vehicle in the paid long-term parking lot.

It is only a short distance to Prevost Island and the campsite has always plenty of space. It is an old orchard and there is a good chance we will see some deer hanging around. The campsite has a composting outhouse, but no picnic tables or potable water. Camping fees are $5 per person per night and paid by cash at the self register station.

Depending on the speed of the group with getting on the water and paddle to the campsite, there is a chance that we arrive close to sunset. Please be prepared to possibly set up your tent in the dark, have your headlight within reach and bring a small red and a green light to attach to your boat. You can buy these at Canadian Tire. Otherwise those yellow emergency light sticks can do the job. Avoid white light, as it blinds you and your fellow paddlers….

I will bring a (small) BBQ and coals. Feel welcome to bring something to grill for Saturday night. Although the chance of bears is extremely slim, still have a method to store your food away for other critters, because there is no food cache yet. We can not have campfires…..but there will be lots of stars!

On the way back, we can take the ferry from Mayne Island (Village Bay), Vancouver Island (Swartz Bay) or Saltspring Island (Long Harbour). We can decide that during the weekend.

Because of the short notice of this trip, I prefer to go with those who are experienced in ocean kayaking and back country camping or those I know from prior trips. This is a group trip and we like to stick together while we are on the water. Please email me if you are interested in joining and include your full name, phone number and emergency contact. Please do not show up unannounced.

It was, indeed, a wonderful trip. Competent paddlers, knowledgeable leader, lots of km paddled. Here are my pictures:

Last week, six of us headed for Okeover Inlet on a club trip to paddle up Lewis Channel and around to the Penn Islands. Amazingly all six of us made it back!

Our group included Patrick and Linda Lloyd, Beverly Wagner, Sarka Lhotak, Juvy Ebrano and myself

It turned out to be a very memorable trip. You can read about it in my blog here: https://seareedblog.wordpress.com/

    Hello Liz

I think that $200 is fair. I can also speak with a welder and get a price. My hours vary considerably so it probably would be best to call me at 604-417-8873. We can figure out a time. I am always around to take a call between 8:30 and 9 am otherwise leave a message if I don’t answer as I am generally oot un uboot.

There’s a Sunset Paddle on the club Trips List that still has space for several participants.  Bring a picnic dinner and paddle with us up the Serpentine River at Crescent Beach at high tide Sunday evening. Email Susan Jensen at sjensen2533@yahoo.ca for details.

    Hi Anja,

I am interested and available any time in the first 2 weeks of August- all locations sound good. I haven’t paddled the Bunsby’s or Nuchatlitz and am interested- but any location is fine with me.
