    Quite right Nick!

I will attend the Feb 27th Open house and I’d like to encourage as many members as possible to attend one of these Open houses – remember that there is strength in numbers and that not attending would be a missed opportunity on our part.  We have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

I hope to see many of you there,

    Thanks in advance,

    Chantal

    I’ll try for Tues 27th.

I’d like our club to push for club lockup protected boat storage space at a city waterfront park and close by a new purpose-built paddling centre, with change rooms and showers. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for, and I’d settle for a city-run public facility if they won’t accommodate our club in its own lock-up (which I think they could and should).  US cities like Venice Beach have much better facilities (but inferior paddling) than we have.  Squamish Paddling Club has a simple but nice lock up covered facility by the ocean. Walk or cycle there and go for an evening paddle, get changed and off home again. Perfect!

Why should the golfers, tennis players, skateboarders and swimmers etc get all the resources?

I took my level 2 with SKILS last year. The option that take the course in Victoria is only slightly cheaper, but you take care of your own accomodation. The option that take the course at Quadra Island cost a bit more, but include accomation at a lodge (which has a sauna).

There are quite a few companies offering Paddle Canada Level 2 at a similar price. For example, locally, there is Ecomarine, Deep Cove Canoe & Kayak Centre, & BC Kayak Centre. On Vancouver I. there is SKILS. Most courses will courses involve taking a ferry. Besides price, you should consider the quality of the instruction. SKABC has offered the course in the past but not this year. The main reason is lack of instructors with current Paddle Canada certification, which is an annual expense.

That sounds like an excellent price, Cory! They can’t be making a lot at that cost.

Hello, I was just wondering if  there are opportunities through SKABC to get your level 2 or know of a group/outfit that I can get it from at a reasonable price. I was talking to Bluedog kayaking on the coast, and there offering it for about $600 all in with food/camp included. Is that a decent price even though I’ll have to take the ferry out there too?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Nick,

Thank you for sharing this with all of us.  I think this is a great opportunity for our club to be present and get involved.  I think it’s important for us to have representation there.

Nick, are you planning to attend, if so, which date do you have in mind?

Today’s announcement by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority might represent more muscle-flexing.  They claim that they are “issuing amendments to the Port Information Guide” but I am suspicious that changing the Fraser R to a Traffic Control Zone (TCZ) from a “Movement Restriction Area” (MRA) effectively bans paddlecraft from the South (Main) Arm of the Fraser R between Sandheads and New Westminster.

The operative phrases seem to be:

“The Fraser River South Arm Traffic Control Zone (TCZ-4) comprises an area extending for a maximum of 61m either side of the charted deep-sea navigation channel or the shoreline, whichever is least”
“All vessels navigating within TCZ-4 shall monitor VHF Channel 74”
“All Tier 2 vessels including fishing vessels, pleasure craft and sailing vessels, when transiting TCZ-4 must be under adequate mechanical power.”
“Tier 2 vessel – Means all other vessel traffic operating in the TCZ-4 boundaries including fishing vessels, pleasure craft and sailing vessels.”

I believe these restrictions are similar to the TCZ restrictions at First Narrows and Second Narrows. Unlike at those two locations, I was not aware of  any previous ban on hand or wind-powered vessels on the Fraser R.  I have paddled in this area and do not consider that I have been a danger to myself or to shipping.  So, if this is new, I don’t support it and will try to stop it.

Please let me know if you are aware of any existing paddling ban on this part of the River.  The 61 m width of each margin of TCZ beyond the deep, dredged channel covers all of the river, except near at some locations such as by Ladner and Deas I, where the river is wider.
