just wanted to add .02 that i as well have 2-3 original Msr dromedary bags. And a paddling partner and myself experienced the same issues. After a number of days the water tasted and smelled off.
Couple years back I contacted Msr and of course they denied any other complaints. And really had no solution or advice. And I have never used the bags again

But what I was told from some people was that it was the chorine or the bromate in the water reacting with the liner. I haven’t gone any further to experiment with using filter water to see if that had a effect on the smell/taste.

I would assume a reverse osmosis system or a carbon filter cartridge would be required. Previously in the past I had a water company come and test my water and told my fridge water filtration was a joke. Unfortunately for this salesman he tested the single stage carbon system on the fridge and it was perfect. Sales pitch destroyed

So i have never taken it further to see if using a carbon filter on the tap would resolve this issue. But looking online some of these filters are as low as 13.00 just have to add fittings.

Hi. I have been there and around that area many times. The Coplands is a super easy little, tiny trip. You could go around all the Coplands probably 10+ times in one short day. Camping is on platforms. Marine Trails website will have the info on camping sites there.  As  day trip from the Coplands you can go check out Savary Island. Watch out for motorboat traffic and wake all around, but especially on the water between the Coplands and the mainland.  One of my worst kayak bashings was from a motor boat wake there.  There can be a lot of motor boat traffic and in my experience, they are tired of kayakers and many do not slow down for them anymore. It has been a couple of years since I have been there, but in the past you could pay to launch at the main dock or you could launch free on the other side of the hotel. Things do change, though. Now? You can put your car in the paid parking lot by the dock. We used to just park on the side of the rd but I don’t know if that is possible anymore or a safe place for your car. Make sure you hit Nancy’s Bakery in town. Hopefully it is still there. The deck on the hotel used to be a good place for a beer at the end of a trip. I really like the tiny hamlet of Lund. Have Fun!

All the parking in Lund is now owned by the hotel. You need to register with them. Not sure what it costs now.  Do NOT leave your car by the side of the road without a sticker on it.  Towing is mighty expensive and does happen.

There are tent pads and biffies on some of the islands

You may have to book with BC Parks – either for individual sites or at least for a back country camping permit which used to be $5 a day.

SKABC members … I am planning on going to the Copeland Islands this summer for a kayak trip.   I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations regarding parking in Lund, route to take from Lund to the islands, location of good/best campsites and any other useful information you might be willing to share.

When I come back I will create and share a trip report + map & photos.

I think I like Maureen’s idea for now to minimize the need for another piece of gear. I thought there might be a way to use one carabiner that could be slotted into different loops but I don’t think that’s possible.

Hi Quirine,

If you already have a quick release belt, there is no need to buy a new one. I have the North system which has a loop on both sides of the belt. At the end of the long line I have a carabiner (Large for ease of use, and unable to come off the line) This end will always be attached to the towed boat. About 15′ up (just long enough to comfortably clear your boat) I have a trucker’s hitch with another carabiner through the loop and attached to my belt on the other side. If I want a long tow it is a simple matter to release the carabiner, pull out the hitch and extend my rope to the full length. Belts sold in Canada have an extra long rope to meet with coast guard requirements and it is a bit longer than is comfortable. If you carry a throw rope as well, you can shorten your tow rope, but experiment before you cut! I don’t remember specs off hand I could can go and measure, or better still let’s get out and have a practice.

Okay, just a follow-up to this. For anyone new to this, there has been a perennial problem with chemical off-tastes to water in MSR Dromedary bags.  Read back up this thread to learn what I did.

My bags also act as part of my emergency kit, so I fill them up and change the water out about every 6 months.   Yesterday, I tasted the 6 month old water in all 4 of them and it was clean with no off-tastes.  So, if you were waiting for me to report back, here it is 4 years later!!
