A friend and I are thinking of paddling Haida Gwaii this summer. We are both intermediate paddlers. We are hoping to get dropped off at the south islands and do about a weeklong trip. We are looking at Morsby explorers as they have gear and itineraries.  For anyone who’s gone there, what is the difficulty level?

We all agree that it’s important to check marine wind forecasts before heading out on the water, but how can you make sense of all different predictions? In this Zoom hosted event, Alan will show how he uses a number of wind forecasting sites and apps while planning his paddles, including Environment Canada, PredictWind, WindAlert, Windy, SpotWx and Big Wave Dave. Expected ocean currents also interact predictably with wind/swell and shoreline features to create the sea states you may encounter on your paddle outing. Doing your homework each time you paddle will keep you safer and make your kayaking experience even more enjoyable!

Siska is a Victoria, BC, Canada kayak club. We enjoy kayaking from Sidney to Sooke typically. All skill levels are welcome to join the club. Hi Andrew,

My name is Stuart McIntyre. I moved to Vancouver in June from the UK. I have been slowly gathering gear to go sea kayaking. I have a paddle, dry tops, personal buoyancy aids, and an old kayak.

unfortunately I am waiting for two hatch covers and a spray skirt, all due to be with me in February..

I agree “Semi dry” is a strange word to put with a dry suit. I have a GUL “semi dry” with the same setup as yours just purchased also. Perhaps we need to do a full review to show what they can handle.

A few leaks in a true immersion emergency is way better than nothing at all.

Mustang is a brand to trust.

I took advantage of a 25%-off sale at MEC over the holidays and ordered a men’s Mustang Survival Hudson drysuit.  Rather than latex seals it has a “CCS” neck closure and neoprene cuffs, so it’s more properly classed as a semi-dry suit I’ve learned. For my purposes that works fine.
Does anyone have experience with this suit and/or the Mustang brand – anything  to know before I (literally) take the plunge?  Thanks!
