Hello Everyone, my name is Stuart McIntyre, I’m new to Canada and to SKABC.

Im looking to rent then buy a fibreglass sea kayak that’s is suitable for a beginner, but one that will give me a few options as I become more proficient. Most likely I will take part in one day paddles, but it would be great to have the ability to do more if the opportunity arises.

I’m hoping someone might be looking to sell a suitable kayak and gear and may be open to renting it to me for a month or so, so that I can try it out and attend beginner training sessions etc. Id obviously take responsibility for looking after it.

Im looking to spend around $2500.00 when I buy.

Follow-up question — I am presuming you used a “typical” concentration of green tea, something like 2 bags/liter? What would the effective lower limit be? 1 bag/liter?

An evening paddle to unwind, relax and get in some exercise. We will likely paddle to Secret Beach (next to Wreck Beach), inhale the sunset/ relax and paddle back. Beginner paddlers welcome.

Launch: At the beach in front of Locarno Beach Trimble Street parking lot.
On the water: 6:45 pm. Likely arrive back at the beach at ~10:45 pm.
Bring kayak light (I have spares if you don’t have one), headlight, snacks/drink.
If the weather is not favourable, the paddle will be cancelled.
Wetsuit or drysuit required.
Maximum 9 paddlers.

Great shame not only for Kayakers but everyone.   I can’t imagine that there won’t be any service – surely something will have to come up to replace it?   Can do Water Taxi from Bamfield to places, I guess.

I may be doing a circumnavigation of Read Island in mid-September, I would be interested to hear about your experience i.e. tips, must sees, campsites.

Thanks John, I assume you are referring to Freedom Point campground.

I may be leaning towards a circumnavigation of Read Island.

Would highly recommend a trip to Octopus Islands.  There is a camp site on Read Isl just across from Discovery Kayaks Lodge on Quadra.   It is a good staging area to go through Surge Narrows.  You have to time your trip north through Surge Narrows so that you are not fighting the current, i.e. going through at slack tide.  Camping on Octopus Islands may be problematic as it is fairly exposed, when looking for a place to go to the bathroom.  At that time of year, there should be relatively few motor boats and sailboats.  It is a favorite spot for boaters.  If you go, you will understand why.

Hello all,

Hope your summer is going well.

Planning trip to Quadra Island mid-September with friend, both of us are intermediate paddlers.

I have option of (i) 3-night camping trip in and around Quadra and surrounding islands or (ii) Series of day trips from sister’s place near Quathiaski ferry.

We will have vehicle.

Anyone have any suggested iteneraries for either  option.

Load up your vehicle with your picnic basket, favourite sun hat, food and beverage, mess kit (plate, cup and utensils), cooler and beach chair, and join us for this summer’s second club social at Locarno Beach (near the Jericho Sailing Center). We welcome you to bring food to share, if desired, provided no restrictions on such events are in place at that time. We will follow whatever BC provincial COVID guidelines are in place, if any. At this time, due to extreme fire risk, a temporary ban on all BBQs is in full effect at all Vancouver parks and beaches.

This is a perfect opportunity to reacquaint yourself with old friends and welcome new members in a beautiful outdoor setting. You will also have a chance to meet some of this year’s club executive. And – all attendees will be entered in a draw for a prize!!!!! Feel welcome to bring a guest.

Log into the website and go to the event calendar to sign up. Sign up early as there is a maximum of 40 people.

Look for the SKABC signage. See you August 9th any time after 5:00pm!
