I am the training coordinator. You should have received an email from me kcunningham.unsw@gmail.com or training2@skabc.org when you registered for the Beginner’s Course. You have also now heard by Cynthia Materi, the lead instructor.

Unfortuneately the Boat Handling and Rescues course filled up in the last two days. But if you are interested in this or any other course that is full, just send me a note requesting to be on the waitlist.  A number of clinics and a first aid course are being added over the next week or two. They are noted on the course page, but details haven’t been posted. The general forum will be used to alert members when details are available and when registration will open. If you have any questions, feel free to email me directly.

PS – After the shoreline paddle the Spring Fling event is being held at Cates Park. Check out the website and register if you  would like to meet members.

Also there is a New Member Welcome Paddle June 4 at Rocky Point — kayak rentals are available at that location as well. Looking forward to meeting you 🙂

Hello,

I am a new member to the club having recently moved to the Vancouver area (currently residing in Burnaby). I was looking to meet new people with similar (kayak and outdoors) interest. I at at the beginner level when it comes to formal kayak training but I have worked in the field and kayaked without training and thus consider myself more intermediate level. I do not yet own a kayak and can transit via metro, which I understand can be a limitation. My interests are conservation, and kayak explroation. My hopes are to: a) chart a course for some formal training this summer so I can join trips, b) join said trips that match my abilities, c) meet new members.

“10 Apr 2023: For anyone using Tantalus Landing there is a deer carcass hidden in the rocks just above high tide. It is not visible unless your out of your boat and walking through the boulders. Based upon the lack of decomposition I don’t think it had been there that long. Unsure if it was a bear food cache. “

It might be worth avoiding the site for a week or two or at least checking carefully before camping there. The tent sites are quite far from the main landing but you wouldn’t want a bear or cougar defending the exact area where your kayak is stored.  Hopefully high water will solve this problem soon enough. I’m passing along this info – not verified. Photo suggests young fawn, so a cougar kill seems the probable cause.

On behalf of SKABC’s Outreach Program, I am organizing the Big Brothers and Big Sisters paddle this year! This is a wonderful day where youth get to experience being on the water and building a relationship with their Big Brother or Sister. I am asking for some volunteer paddlers on this day to be support for the BBBS pairs on the water.

LOCATION: Rocky Point Park – Port Moody

The day will last from 9-5. Shifts will go from 9-11, 12-1 and 3-5 so you could do just one shift, but generally volunteers stay for the whole day. I would also greatly appreciate having someone there with me at about 7:30am to help set up our tent and watch boats and gear. Volunteers for the on water activity should be ready for launch at least 15 minutes prior to the shift start time.
