On behalf of SKABC’s Outreach Program, I am organizing the Big Brothers and Big Sisters paddle this year! This is a wonderful day where youth get to experience being on the water and building a relationship with their Big Brother or Sister. I am asking for some volunteer paddlers on this day to be support for the BBBS pairs on the water.

LOCATION: Rocky Point Park – Port Moody

The day will last from 9-5. Shifts will go from 9-11, 12-1 and 3-5 so you could do just one shift, but generally volunteers stay for the whole day. I would also greatly appreciate having someone there with me at about 7:30am to help set up our tent and watch boats and gear. Volunteers for the on water activity should be ready for launch at least 15 minutes prior to the shift start time.

BC Parks will work at Apodaca Park, Bowen I, 18/19 Apr, camping overnight. They have requested 2 volunteers from SKABC. (Small numbers are needed to avoid more stringent worksite safety/first aid precautions).

We will put in the base beams for the 4 tent platforms and the base for the composting toilet. A Squamish Nation observer will be present.

I likely will go by small boat, but another option is ferry + walk-in. Expect long work days.

Experience is desirable also would be best to camp overnight to achieve as much as possible in the 2 short days.

There might be a follow-up work day (e.g. add decking, site cleanup).

I’ve camped at Gerald I a few times and I’d say there is enough space for 10 tents at present. (The first time I went, there were none, until we cleared enough ivy off the ground!). Camping there is very pleasant. (but I’m not saying the work is fun!)  For day trippers, the limited parking (6 cars) at Blueback Community Park, the normal launch site, might fill up, but Schooner Cove Marina is not much further away and has plenty of parking, although one probably needs to pay there. There is also Es-hw Sme-nts Community Park, where one can launch, although I haven’t actually done so. I did check it out. It might need 2 people to carry boats a short distance – wheels likely won’t work here.

The one way paddle from Blueback is only 1.5 NM, from Schooner 2.0 NM and still shorter from the other possible launch sites.

I mulling about going this year – other projects closer to home might take precedence e.g. Apodaca.

Hi everyone.  I see this course is not on the training schedule so I thought I would offer space in the one I currently have scheduled for anyone interested.

It takes place the weekend of April 29/30 at Vanier Park in Vancouver.  Cost is $150.00 per person – a 40% discount off my regular price of $250.00 for SKABC members.

You will need to have all your own gear including:  kayak, paddles (2), sprayskirt, immersion gear (wetsuit or drysuit), footwear, PFD, whistle, Pump, throw bag or tow system.

The course goes from 0830 – 1630 hrs each day (8 hrs).  Bring your lunch and snacks.  It will cover:  Rescue and Re-Entry Skills (Solo, Assisted & towing); Paddle Skills and Technique (Launching & Landing, forward, reverse, sweep, stopping, draw strokes, low brace, stern rudder & edge control); and some excellent knowledge topics (equipment & care, communication, navigation, route planning, weather, sea state, risk assessment & mitigation, cold issues, sun safety and much more).

This is a course for beginners with some experience, those wanting Paddle Canada certification or those just wanting a really good review of their skills, technique and knowledge.  It is a jam packed course with focus on paddling and skills practice.  You will learn a lot on this course and it is well worth the club price being offered.

Well spotted, Richard. My error again, due to my clumsy, fat fingers. I bought the PLB in Spring 2020, not in 2000!

Richard, you say “test PRN and replace earlier than they say”.

Given that Nick’s reading of the instructions are that one should test the battery at least once annually, I would expect the annual testing is anticipated in the 5 year battery life.  There fore, replacement earlier that they say is probably not necessary.

Please report on the test.  If it succeeds, that would indicate the battery life is seriously underestimated.

I don’t have a PLB but…   I wondered about the battery life.   In general for something like this one should not push battery life to it’s max; so the question is “how replaceable is the battery”?

Quick google I see a product “ACR PLB_400”; spec sheet says “Battery Replacement 5 years” – this is good because it means that the battery can be replaced; and that the battery is “Non-hazmat Lithium Batteries (LiMnO2)”.

This is a “Lithium – Manganese Dioxide Battery (Li-MnO2) Batteries” – not a usual battery, I think, but it looks like every manufacturer makes them so they shouldn’t be hard to find.

So my assessment would be – test PRN and replace earlier than they say.

I think Nick is overdue for replacing his battery.    23 years is too optimistic for my taste.

I did not correctly answer a question  about the PLB which was posed at the last club on-line meeting. I was asked “How can I test that the device works?” My reply was that you can’t really test it – just trust the manufacturer and replace the battery each 7 years.

Reading my instruction manual (!) it seems that I should test it once annually. The test button will send a short burst of signal (like an aircraft’s distress signal) that should be done only in the first five minutes of any hour – apparently this is by international agreement.

Each test depletes the battery by 10%, which is why more frequent testing is not recommended, if you expect the battery to last 7 years.

I’ve owned mine since 2000, so I guess I’m overdue for a test!
