Including a special presentation by Nathan Slater of A Little Paddle.

From April 16th to September 1st, 2023, Nathan Slater and Sanesh Iyer paddled a pair of sea kayaks from Victoria BC to Yakutat Alaska, covering a distance of 1935 nautical miles (3500km). Their journey led them through remote communities, abandoned industrial towns, natural hot springs, and to the base of North America’s largest tidewater glacier.

During the presentation, Nathan will cover highlights (and some lowlights) from the expedition as well as tips and tricks for planning your own sea kayak expedition. Check out their trip blogs for a sneak peek at some of the stories that may be told!

I’ve been invited to visit Simson Park on S Thormanby I on Friday by the Senior Park Ranger, Elyse Guzek. Using the BC Parks boat, there is room for an additional person.

If another member would like to come and is willing to ride with me, please contact me asap.

I’m booked on the 07:30 ferry, so must be at Horseshoe Bay by 06:55.

The Park Ranger wants to look at the work we did last month, cutting invasive plants, and give us guidance for our next effort that comes up soon.

I don’t know how much actual work we are likely to do on Friday – short visit.

I took the Knots & Tarps course years ago and it is a great course. I have have been using it for Kayaking as well as many other areas around the house, rigging tarps for friends, using the Knots in many circumstances not related to Kayaking and emergency situations.

It would be a shame if the Knots & Tarps has to be cancelled as the skills learned can be used in many other areas and the skills will be used for a life time.

Unfortuneately, we have no registrations to date for SKABC’s Knots & Tarps course on morning of Saturday March 30. We appreciate that it is on the Easter Weekend.  However, if you missed it and are interested, we require 8 registered and paid participants by noon on Friday March 15 or the course will be cancelled.  Please go to the website, sign in and register.  If we do not meet the minimum number of 8  registration fees will be refunded.

Here is the description of this fun and informative 3 hr course as found on the member website:

• Do you have trouble remembering how to tie knots?
• Do you have trouble rigging up tarps that don’t sag in the wind or rain?
• This course teaches only 8 knots that you can use to secure kayaks and set-up tarps in camp. 
• You will learn:
  – how to use the 8 knots in any kayaking/camping environment to rig fully adjustable tarp systems and
  – about rope composition, what type of rope to buy and where to buy rope.
• Bob will also demonstrate his food cache system and everyone will have a chance to operate it!

I will be sad to see the Legend go but I have one too many kayaks at the moment. Very fast, ideal for touring and long trips.

Built in 2021, I purchased it from the original owner where it had seen very little use.  I had Seaward add a Ritchie compass and a full length keel guard to protect the hull. The Nigel Foster seat is paired with an IRS adjustable back band giving excellent feel and good control. The Legend is designed by Nigel Foster and made by Seaward under license. It is in excellent condition. Stored in the garage and washed after every use.  Used mainly for paddling locally in Howe Sound and Deep Cove and for my Paddle Canada Level 3 course in the Broken Group.

Seaward provided me a replacement cost quote for insurance purposes and as new it would be over $8,000 after taxes.

Comes with 2 keys and locks can lock into the roof.

It folded nicely, can lock and keep it on the roof without having to take it out.

Good Morning: I am interested in adding a “sail kit” to my Solace 18XL kayak. I have too many questions to address here, but, does anyone have experience with any of the “kayak only” sails. I don’t want a huge sail, just some help on long trips.
