It’s short notice, but Wayne Church, our March feature presenter is on shift this Saturday and would be like  to provide a tour of the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue operation and rescue craft this Saturday morning.

Date: Saturday March 9th
Time: 9am
Duration: ~1hr
Location: Horsehoee Bay

If at least 6 people are interested we can make this happen (max. 10). If there’s interest by more than 10 members we’ll aim to schedule a tour at a future date when he rotates back on for a Saturday inspection when all equipment and boats are at the station.
If you’re interested and cannot attend this Saturday mention that in the comments as it will determine if we schedule a future tour.

Once we have at least six people who respond to this message, I’ll reach out directly to those interested with details.

VHF training and certification training opportunity for SKABC members

VHF radios are a critical component to trip planning and on water decision making during a trip. While members can seek out VHF radio courses and secure their marine radio operator licence from many providers, Jericho Beach Kayak School (located at 1300 Discovery Street, Vancouver) has offered a SKABC member only opportunity. Details follow. If you are interested, please respond to this poll so we can confirm the dates and pricing that will apply. While the price cannot be discounted, a SKABC member only course will ensure that the focus of the in person discussions will relate to kayaking situations. The course will be offered in-person, at Jericho Beach, in two parts. Pricing depends on the number of registrants. $199 for 5-10 participants and $179 if 11 or more. Members in the same household can share the materials and a $50 discount is available for the 2nd person. This poll will allow us to confirm the dates and pricing so registrations can begin on March 6th. We appreciate that members come from around the lower mainland, so, we have 2 options:

Option #1: Thursday evenings – April 4 and 18 (6-9 pm)

Options #2: Saturday morning – April 6 and 13 (9am – 12 pm)

Thanks for this info Nancy.  I can’t make the Cineplex showings but it’s also playing next Friday (International Woman’s Day) at the Rio and the filmmaker will be there for a Q&A.  I’ve secured my tickets, the trailer looks very good!

For those of you who missed the VIMFF this week, the winning film is playing at Cineplex for the next week.

The filmmaker planned to hike/paddle/bike the entire TransCanada Trail in 500 days on her own.   If you like hanging out in the outdoors and being self-propelled, this is worth watching.   And the filmmaker wants people to go to Cineplex to show them that people do watch documentaries.
