Hi SKABC Members, this forum was down for maintenance in 2024. Sorry for the inconvenience. To restore it so that it is private for current members only, all subscriptions were removed.

Please resubscribe if you wish to participate. This forum is especially valuable in winter and shoulder seasons when paddling conditions can be wonderful if an outing is planned on a short-notice basis.

    Hi,

I just received a SKABC Email with Black Friday Course discounts from BestCoast Outfitters, in Victoria.

All of these courses appear to be held in the Victoria area. Are there any in the Lower Mainland?

Both kayaks would have significant value. The Klepper is a timeless classic, likely having a value above $5K. Should be easy to sell, but this is not the best time of year.

These are both slower, older style boats, but for trips involving air transport, are still in demand because they break down into bagged units for re-assembly on the shore /river bank. I’ve seen hem used like this in the Arctic.

It is possible that Club Locarno might be interested.

For a charity, it is possible that BC Marine Trail could auction them for funds – they have a fund campaign on at this time – and possibly give the donor a tax receipt. Someone would need to store them in the meantime and I suppose I could volunteer to do that, although my place is already choc a bloc.

As a non-charity, SKABC could do likewise.

Maybe Gina could find out if that would work?

Not an offer to be passed up lightly…

I would appreciate some advice about donation (or sale) of two kayaks I have. I’m in the Vancouver area.

Both are new and never used. One is a Klepper (Aerius Expedition, two person), and the other Folbot Yukon. They are more than ten years old, but have never been used. There’s no reason to believe there are any issues because of the age (I think), although I have not explored.

My preference is to donate them to an (non-profit) organization which will put them to good and frequent use. An outdoor education program, like the TREK program at Prince of Wales High School in Vancouver, came to mind, but I have not approached them yet and have no idea if they would even be interested.

At one point I contacted various kayak sellers to see if they do consignment sales, but both indicated there is not a good market for that now. Don’t know if that has changed.

Any ideas or thoughts about suitable programs etc that might be interested in this would be greatly appreciated. If you post here, I’ll contact the organizations.

Yes the contract is transferable. It’s something that want to highlight.

Boat storage is a hot commodity in this town.  If the contract is transferable, it could be a selling feature.

Edit – Sorry, just realized you mentioned that already.

Maybe do the math on how much the storage would cost you through to the spring and how much cheaper you would need to price the boat to avoid having to pay that?

Also, I would reword the title on your posting.   “Please buy” makes you sound desperate and people might come in with a much lower price assuming that you were desperate to sell.

Nancy the correct names for the hatches is helpful.  Ya the model has changed materials over the years. It’s quite an old boat. I picked it up in 2008.  I have to admit that I really don’t want to pay storage and

An wish I could speed up the process.

I agree with the things already mentioned.   I suspect that the time of year is the biggest challenge.

In addition, when I look at your posting, you mention it is a fibreglass boat, but all the current models of that boat that I see advertised say it is high density polyethylene.   People might be confused when they check the manufacturer’s website and wonder which is correct.

Most of us would call the “three compartments sealed compartments”  hatches, front, rear, and a day hatch behind the cockpit.  Just the terms that are most common and comfortable for people.

    Good luck.

    A couple of suggestions.

    Price is always a factor.

Time of year. Spring maybe a better time when people are thinking of paddling.

Update your post to keep it fresh.

Offer people to try before they buy.

Look at our buy & sell forum to see what sold and maybe learn from that.

Do you have a description of the kayak and a couple of photos?
