January 16, 2025 at 11:28 pm in reply to: Rear spoiler protection for rear loading to rollers #25772Nick Heath
My first idea, Quirine, would be take off the silly spoiler – it’s likely just a piece of useless styling/marketing on any vehicle that will not travel at speeds above 250 km/h!
Quirine SchuyffHi all:
With my old Rav4 I would lean my bow on a blanket on the rear of my car then pivot and slide the boat up and onto the rollers. My new car has a rear spoiler so I need a way to protect that when loading onto my Yakima Sweet Roll cradles from the rear of the car. Just wondering if anyone has experience with some products or has some ideas. Thanks!
Some ideas I have seen:

Kevin AmosThe Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival (VIMFF) and North Shore Rescue are pleased to invite the public to nominate candidates for the 12th annual Tim Jones Award. Nominate someone who’s made a difference in your community on the VIMFF website. https://vimff.org/tim-jones-award/
The Tim Jones Award is awarded annually to recognize an individual or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the outdoor community in British Columbia. Previous honorees include trail builders, race organizers, leaders of women’s hiking groups, indigenous women serving as role models for outdoor enthusiasts, dedicated conservationists, and members of search and rescue teams. What unites these recipients, past and present, is their commitment to helping others experience and enjoy nature and the great outdoors.
The award represents Tim’s legacy and serves as an inspiration to selflessly help others. The mission of the award is to educate and share the passion for nature and the love for our mountains and waters.
Criteria
The nominees for this award should meet the following criteria:
1. Active in the British Columbian outdoor community
2. Has made an outstanding contribution in a social, environmental, educational, or public safety capacity
3. Has not received direct remuneration for their volunteer work or performed the services as part of their regular business or professional activities
4. Is an ‘unsung hero’ (received little in the way of public recognition for their accomplishments)
All submissions will be judged by a jury consisting of: Taylor Jones (daughter of late Tim Jones); Mike Danks (North Shore Rescue); and Richard Walton (former mayor of District of North Vancouver). They will select a recipient from the eligible candidates.
A special thanks to Lindsay Jones and Peter Haigh who have been on the jury for the past 10 years!
Anyone can submit their nominee until February 6, 2025.
The winner of the award will be announced during the VIMFF in February 2025.

About the Tim Jones Award:
The Tim Jones Community Achievement Award was established in 2014 to honor the legacy of Tim Jones, a North Shore Search and Rescue leader and paramedic dedicated to helping keep people safe in the North Shore Wilderness areas. The award recognizes individuals and organizations who have demonstrated outstanding commitment and service to public safety and the BC outdoor recreation and sports community.
About Tim Jones:
Tim Jones, a paramedic by profession, spent a quarter of a century leading North Shore Rescue, a volunteer organization that has rescued hundreds of lost and injured persons in the backcountry north of Vancouver’s urban area. A recipient of the Order of British Columbia, an educator and fundraiser, Tim’s energy, enthusiasm and courage pointed out the necessity of careful planning and respect for those engaging in backcountry activities.
Quirine SchuyffHi Duncan:
Sign up for the party and there will be a space to say what you will bring. In there you can put “open to bring what is needed”
We will be organizing food and who brings what this week. We will email people and ask them to bring items that will ensure our taco bar has everything it needs and then have some extra items too.
see you there!
Duncan BrayI’m new to SKABC and would like to come for the social, I’m not sure what to expect though. I’m not great at potlucks at the best of times, but don’t want to turn up with ‘another’ tub of guacamole and a bag of chips.
Any suggestions?
Quirine SchuyffOLE! HOLY GUACAMOLE FIESTA!
Don’t forget to sign up soon! This is just over a week away and drinks will be bought and food planned soon. Please see the website for all the details but important to remember points are:
- bring small denominations of cash for the cantina (we will have some change)
- renew your membership before, or simultaneously, as you register for the party
- dress to match the theme and have a fun place setting too!
Theresa DaviesI resubscribed and do not see where/how to post a short notice paddle. Could you give more info please.
Andrea KovitsHello Fellow Paddlers,
Your Trips Committee and Trip Leaders have been hard at work designing and planning trips for you for the coming year. We have 14 posted already and lots more to come.
Registration has already opened for two interesting day paddles in January. Our first paddle of 2025 is along the Alouette River in Pitt Meadows on Jan 4th, and next we have a circumnavigation of the Upper Burrard Inlet on Jan. 18th.
If you want to challenge yourself to paddle every month of the year, it is time to sign up 🙂
IMPORTANT: Membership renewal is required to sign up for 2025 trips.
Check the website often as we will be adding new trips over the coming weeks.
Please remember that a lot of effort goes into planning, posting, and preparing for trips. When you sign up, you are making a commitment that matters. Out of respect for the trip leader and your fellow participants, kindly sign up only for trips that you definitely intend to join.
Wishing everyone the best of the festive season!

Quirine SchuyffThanks Caity! I’ll see what comes up and keep this in mind!
Caity MiltonI made this playlist for a recent sailing-themed dinner party. It definitely has a Latin twist… perhaps it’ll work for the Fiesta? https://open.spotify.com/playlist/00Pyl1GQATgPUnVwOgciUB?si=QMiYyLJGS-iSR5EfNLDhDQ
Quirine SchuyffDue to a conflict in scheduling, the member we had planned to have as a DJ is unable to attend the Fiesta. We are looking for someone to be in charge of music for the evening. This is an informal, no pressure position and can be as easy as choosing a song list from Spotify (would need a Premium membership), or as complex as creating one fully chosen. Either way, we just want some easy listening tunes through dinner, and some more upbeat music to entice dancing. A Latin influence could be the main theme but it doesn’t need to be the whole evening either.
Please feel free to email social2@skabc.org and ask questions or offer your DJ skills!AdminIn time for winter paddling, our Short Notice Forum is now available to SKABC members. It was down for maintenance in 2024. Starting now, if you’d like to receive an email when someone posts a paddle you will need to manually subscribe.
To Subscribe:
Log in a SKABC.org
In the Forums menu, go to “Manage My Forums”
by “Short Notice Paddles. Personal trips not officially sponsored by SKABC” click on the green “+”
That’s it! Do read the guidelines before participating. This forum is especially useful in the winter and shoulder seasons so you can post a day paddle when we have a calm clear weather window. Hopefully we’ll have lots of nice opportunities this winter.
