We’re looking again for a little help. This time we are putting up bear hangs – wires between trees to throw a rope over to suspend your food, so that we avoid or rather prevent the Howe Sound bear population from learning bad habits, like snacking on your grub.

First outing looks like Monday 26 Oct. Yell if you are available.  Skiff transport. Full day needed. PFD, boots, rain gear, gloves needed.

Using these materials he can repair kayaks, surfskis, stand up paddleboards, surfboards, and paddles. This is a short spin up and down the Nicomekl on what is supposed to be a sunny and calm morning amidst all these hurricane clouds and gusty winds.  A Saturday paddle I was going to do was cancelled due to forecast high winds, but Sunday’s weather–especially in the morning–is looking better than it has in weeks.  “A mix of sun and clouds”, “14C”, and “increasing to 30% of rain” in the afternoon.  Could the weather forecasters be right about any of this?

Come find out with a short 6 mile (10 km) paddle in the lower Nicomekl, starting from Elgin Park in White Rock at 10:30.  We’ll head upriver to the dam, and then spin around down to Crescent Beach for lunch, and then back to Elgin Park.  The river is quite protected even if the winds return, but we’ll play it very safe.  Rated 1A.

Watch the currently-running pinks, coho, and chum swim upstream in the shallow Harrison River, and perhaps see eagles feeding on the spent bodies of those which choose to spawn in the Harrison, Morris, or Weaver.

This all-day, down-river event starts at 9am at the put-in on Harrison Lake at Harrison Hot Springs. It requires setting a shuttle at the take-out point, Kilby Provincial Park (a 25-minute drive one-way); car pooling is recommended.

We will pause at the Chehalis sacred rock and see the pictographs that have adorned the rock for centuries, if not millennia. Lunch will be on the beach at the confluence of the Morris and Harrison, and some may take a short round-trip paddle up the Morris slough to the end of Weaver Creek after lunch.

The total trip distance is 17 kilometers, plus 5 for the Morris side trip.  For real salts, that is 9 or 12 nautical miles.  The paddle is classified B2 but is suitable for a fit beginner in large part because we will be paddling relatively lightly with the current.  (Pray for rain to get an even stronger flow going.)

For the past couple of weeks notification email messages have not been delivered when something new is added to the forum.
