Thinking of getting into salmon fishing  from my sea kayak. Is anyone familiar with this, if so do you have any tips on salmon rod type, gear etc. Looks like it would be quite an exhilarating experience to have one reeled in!

    cheers,

    Hi Maureen,

I have a club radio you can borrow. It’s really old (18 yrs old) but it works fine. Can you pick it up in the VGH area tomorrow? If so, let’s continue this conversation outside the forum.

Does the club have a radio I could borrow for this weekend?

I could pick it up on Wednesday and return it next week.

    Thanks Maureen

    Hi all SKABC members:

If you do not receive email from MEC, check out the calendar of events on their website. They have included an Intro to Marine Navigation evening event this coming Thursday. Check it out if you weren’t able to do the navigation course offered by the club or as a refresher. Best to take our course, though as you’ll put it into actual practice…..

The club received this notice from John Thoreson for our forum:

I found a 5L MEC blue dry bag with women’s outdoor clothing on the outside of Aristazabal Is. on a kayaking trip earlier this summer and, even though it’s probably 1 in a million, figure whoever lost their gear would be excited to get it back.

I’m contacting different clubs and shops to get the word out. Who knows?

    Contact him at johnsthoreson@yahoo.com

I would say that the big three (Ecomarine -Granville Isl & Jericho, Deep Cove and MEC) are the first on most people’s list, but there are countless others that are equally suitable.  Renting at MEC will require transportation to your final location though, one benefit of renting on the water.

As for packrafting, you can rent locally a Caps Bikes, the BCMC had a intro packrafting course earlier this year, the Vancouver Whitewater Club may be of help, there are several facebook whitewater groups (Fraser Valley, Whistler, Squamish) and finally the 1st Canadian Packrafting Roundup starting on the 31st in Mt Robson Park.

    Hello all,

Brand new to kayaking and looking to join some of the courses SKABC offer and come along to some of the trips organised. Where is the best place you have found to hire kit from?

I’m also really interested in packrafting so if anyone has one or knows of someone with a packraft I’d love to have a chat.

Hope to meet you all soon.

    Hi Everyone,

I happy to announce that we have a new member in our ranks who is a well known and respected Paddle Canada Instructor, Mike Gilbert.  Mike teaches several courses, one that is coming up very quickly and still have spaces available is the Paddle Canada Level 2/3 Skills Course.  The dates are September 9th to 14th in God’s Pocket.  The cost of this course is $750, however, SKABC members enjoy a 10% discount.

Please contact Mike at mgilbert1600@gmail.com or 778.835.0774 or  Jeff Burdison at jburdison@telus.net or 604.729.3546 to register or obtain more information.

Rescue and rolling practice Sunday 26 at Stratchcona Park 8.0am to 10.00am

I will be launching from Deep Cove at 7.30. Let me know if you will be coming, and if you need help unloading your boat. Please phone or email if you have any questions.

    Maureen benzon@telus.net

Alternate launch at Strathcona Beach. Google 4618 Strathcona Road for directions. The satellite image clearly shows the park. Parking is at the park, or across the road at the playground and easier than Deep Cove but the early start more or less assures parking.

The smoke will be gone, but the forecast is for cooler temps and possible rain. DCCK has a hot shower available to warm you up.
