Nick HeathA kind volunteer has come forward but further help will still be appreciated!
Nick HeathBC Parks staff will be walking some of the trails 22 May. Any days before that date, I’m hoping to set up the temporary trail signposts that we did not finish putting up on 30 Mar. This involves walking with a pack, but is not hard. The Park is beautiful.
Short paddle over to S Thormanby from Brooks Cv. Camp 1 night.
Any days suit me but the long weekend might be now awkward for getting a ferry booking, depending on our timing preference. Car ride share offered. If your paddling experience is slight, I could take a tandem kayak or a power boat instead.

Nick HeathBCMT met with the Parks Canada Superintendent but did not get very far except we heard their commitment to attempt to find alternative sites in the next year or two. This was judged to be an unsatisfactory outcome.
Further requests will be made for more definitive background information (e.g. consultant’s report) and an approach will be made through political channels (Green Party MP Elizabeth May represents this federal riding).
As far as is known, no individual First Nation had raised any issues of cultural or heritage preservation related to the use of Cabbage Island for paddle-in camping.
Its continued day use by fee-paying boaters using the mooring buoys and toilet suggests an unequal regard by Parks Canada to paddlers as opposed to those using larger vessels, even though the latter user group has more options for dispersal to other sites.
Thanks for supporting BCMT!
Nick HeathA recent court decision has transferred land title for some parts of N Nootka I to the Nuchatlaht Nation, affecting Garden Pt, Garden Pt east and Wy ash Island – popular campsites, formerly in the Nuchatlitz Prov Park and in a Provincial Recreation Site within a Provincial Forest. The new Park boundaries are still unclear.
As far as BC Marine Trails can determine, the Nuchatlaht have not yet taken any move to restrict public access to these sites and might decide to not limit access in future. However, logging activity appears to have already made Garden Point unusable. Temporary notices closing this site were seen there in early Fall 2024.
Information will be updated on the BC Marine Trails map when available.
BCMT much appreciates the support of many SKABC members. Thanks!

Nick HeathI recently visited Pedals & Paddles near Tuwanek and spoke with Kyle Reid. I’m sure many SKABC members have patronized this fine business. I judge that they offer the best launch option for paddlers arranging overnight trips in Sechelt Inlet. With ample selection of rental kayaks and a responsible attitude to safety, they are very well set up for any beginner-level or higher overnight club trip. The user fee with one’s own boat is $20 per weekend i.e. $10 for first day and $5 for each subsequent day. For convenience, I added this location to the BCMT map.
Note that overnight parking is prohibited at Lambs Brook, anywhere in Tuwanek and at several other local launch sites. Locals are quick to call the By-law Enforcement Officer!
I hoped SKABC would offer some trips this year in Sechelt inlet, but those listed earlier seem to have disappeared from our trips schedule.
AdminIn July 2024, Philip Kubik and fellow SKABC member Ted Lam paddled from Port Hardy around Cape Scott and through Quatsino Sound to Coal Harbour. Philip will show photographs from this trip and a 2021 trip guided by SKILS which covered the same route as far as San Josef Bay. We hope you’ll join us for what promises to be an informative presentation!

John WoodcockHi Nancy
Last year friends needed hatch covers for an old Nimbus kayak.
They got them from (had them made by):
David Middleton 252 west 5th, north Vancouver. (Chesterfield and 5th, west of Lonsdale)
604 240-Hope this helps – John.
AdminHi Nancy, we’ve ordered hard-to-find sizes from Topkayaker.com a couple times.
Nick HeathI plan to go to Simson Park 7 & 8 May to continue posting temporary trail direction signs left on site 30 Mar. It will involve walking with a pack.
Short paddle from Brooks Cv. launch to Pebbly Bch, camp 1 night.
Next day short paddle to Drift Bay. Work nearby then return to Brooks Cv. & home.A complication is that I am attending a Sechelt planning focus group in evening of 6 May, so I’ll camp that night at Porpoise Bay – hence the volunteer must stay 1 extra night or not carpool with me.
Showers forecast, but nothing nasty.
Pl. reply to treasurer2<at>skabc.org
