Skookumchuck Narrows is all about currents.    The concern I raise here is training in an environment that adequately teaches both self and and assisted rescue after capsizing in heavy wind and waves, and also developing one’s skills (in real world conditions) to avoid capsizing.   We are fortunate in Vancouver, to have these real world conditions at our doorstep!

Greetings, fellow paddlers!

I’m requesting your support on a federal petition to ban the use of expanded polystyrene (aka styrofoam) in Canadian waters. Over the past few years I’ve been involved in a number of ocean cleanup initiatives on Savary Island and in Desolation Sound, and I now know beyond a doubt that most of what we find on BC’s beaches by volume and by weight is expanded polystyrene, far more than the other single use plastics that have galvanized federal bans so far. This foam is routinely placed directly into the marine environment in the form of dock floatation, but it often escapes from its owners during our increasingly frequent storms. It breaks down even more rapidly than other plastics into tiny particles that are impossible to recover, adsorbs persistent organic pollutants in marine waters and can become increasingly toxic the longer it’s in the water. Like all marine plastics, it is readily mistaken for food by mammals, fish, and birds. Think of it as a continual solid oil spill.

I initiated the petition with the full support and help of the office of my MP, Rachel Blaney (Vancouver Island North-Powell River). For every 30 paper signatures MP Blaney will stand in the House of Commons to represent the issue. For every 500 signatures on the e-petition, she’ll do the same. The goal is to allow her to bring up the issue over and over again in Parliament. Please be counted as someone who wants action on this preventable waste and pollution!

Thanks for your suggestion Bob.  I ended up taking it to John at Coast Outdoors in North Vancouver.  He did an amazing job, and the cost was very reasonable.  If others are in need of fibreglass repairs, I would recommend him highly.

I joined SKABC earlier this year from Australia as I was coming to BC with my son, Ben, for an extended trip and wanted to meet and hopefully paddle with some local sea kayakers.

George Prevost answered my post and was kind (and trusting) enough to take on Ben and I and host us for a fortnight of paddling in the Broughton Archipelago and God’s Pocket in July. We were joined on those trips, firstly, by Heather Kirk and then by Robin Macqueen.

Ben and I had a wonderful time. This would not have been possible without George’s assistance as well as his, Heather and Robin’s company. So I am writing now, belatedly, to say a very big thank you to George for all he did for Ben and I. Also a big shout out to Heather and Robin for coming along and being such good company.

I have managed to write up a report of the two trips and added a few photos if any members are interested in reading about the trips. You can find the reports in a couple of blog posts at the link below.

Ben and I are currently in California having a look around, but will be back in Vancouver the first week of November to fly out 7 November. Depending on weather and our timing, we may get ourselves organised for a day paddle (easy/beginner) before we fly. If we do, I will post to this forum to let members know.

I am planning to do rolling practice at Sasmat lake Friday morning.

Meet up 9:30am at White Pine beach parking lot F, then use kayak carts to carry to the beach.

Usual practice time is about two to three hours.

Bring Kayak cart, wet or dry suit. gloves, toque, goggles, nose plugs are optional.

Recommended for paddlers have some exposure to rolling or rolling exercises before.

If anyone likes to come and do rescue practice on the side are also welcome. I am not a qualified instructor to teach rolling or rescue however this could be an opportunity to practice what you have already learn.

Hi Jim,

I have a kevlar kayak and over the last few years I have managed to put a few good dings into the Gel Coat but I couldn’t find any Gel Coat touch Up kits. I was in a Michaels Craft Store in either Langley or Surrey and bought a 2 oz bottle of “Craft Smart Outdoor Acrylic Paint”. There are many colours to select from and it has worked. I clean the area with alcohol and put three thin coats onto the damaged area. It is not as good as Gel Coat but so far it has worked well.

I have had my Green Land Paddle for several Months and have found it very effective when you have a sore wrist. The only draw back was a lot of water was dripping onto my Spray Shirt and also soaking the rest of my body above the Cock Pit.

What I did to solve this was to install Drip Rings and push them about 25 inches from the tip of the paddle. Problem solved for me and if you are having the same problem, hopefully this will also help you.        Bob Maher

One could always take a trip to the Skookumchuck Narrows and play around when its going off. Find the zone of comfort and bail when it gets to big.

My kayak (Current Designs Prana) suffered a couple of small areas of damage to the gel coat this summer. There are two spots about a half inch in diameter along the keel at the bow end (bounced on rocks).  Can anybody recommend the best place to get them repaired?  I am in the Tri-Cities area of Vancouver.

Oh no. Sorry to hear this. Yes, the serial number should help. Even if used, perhaps they can find out from the original owner/Delta?

I hope it is found. Some audacity to steal kayaks. People are brazen.

Hi, Tyronne.  The boat is red, and has a number of JSC stickers on it (Jericho Sailing Centre).  Delta kayaks do have serial numbers, but as the boat was purchased used it likely wasn’t recorded.
