I am planning to organize a last minute trip to West cost between July 6th to 14th, looking for experience paddles capable of handling outer coast of Vancouver island.

This area could have strong winds, swells and surf conditions where paddlers should be able to handle various dynamic conditions.

Trip Itinerary:-

Option 1: Fair Harbour to Zeballos:

July 6 –  drive to Fair Harbour – shuttle vehicle
July 7 –  paddle to Rugged Point
July 8 –  paddle to Grassy Islet or Gregoire Point
July 9 –  paddle to Yellow Bluff
July 10 –  paddle to Catala Island
July 11 –  paddle to Rosa Island or somewhere in Nuchatlitz Inlet
July 12 –  paddle toward Zeballos and camp somewhere in Esperanza inlet
July 13 –  paddle in to Zeballos and do shuttle
July 14 –  drive to ferry and home

Option 2: Zeballos toward Rugged Point and back:

July 6 –  drive to Zeballos
July 7 – drive to Little Espanosa launch site and paddle to campsite in Esperanza inlet
July 8 – paddle to Catala Island
July 9 – paddle to Yellow Bluff
July 10 – paddle to Gregoire Point, Grassy Islet or Rugged Point
July 11 – paddle back to Yellow bluff
July 12 – paddle back toward Zeballos and camp in Esperanza inlet
July 13  – paddle to Little Espanosa, land and camp (Zeballos?)
July 14 – drive to ferry and home

Option 3: Zeballos to Tachu Point and then into Nuchatlitz Inlet

July 6 –  drive to Zeballos
July 7 – drive to Little Espinosa launch and paddle to campsite in Esperanza inlet
July 8 – paddle to Catala Island
July 9 – paddle to Yellow Bluff
July 10 – paddle to Rosa Island
July 11 and 12  – paddle into Nuchatlitz Inlet and back
July 13  – paddle to Little Espaiosa and land
July 14 – drive to ferry and home

Total distance is approximately 50-60NM depending on the router.

Hi Helen

Coast Outdoors which is on Kevin’s list rents out kayaks right on the water in Deep Cove. The only problem there is that there are parking restrictions in Deep Cove. so you may have to drop off your gear and park some distance away from the beach.

UPDATE:

Apologies, I had originally made this post asking for kayak rental or assistance getting a kayak to Deep Cove. It is actually, Porteau Cove and not Deep Cove.

 

I am new to the club, first excursion is planned and I am very excited… except, I do not have the proper vehicle to transport a kayak to Porteau Cove on July 6. APOLOGIES, I had originally said Deep Cove.

Squamish Water Sports is able to transfer a kayak for me to Porteau Cove on July 6. I am delighted. In case anyone else needs to rent for this exciting day… SWS seems to be reasonable and able.

I agree with Jonas. I live out in Maple Ridge. I add 3 hours from Deep Cove and it works as a fairly good approximation. I have often been up Widgeon during the dry times of year and not been able to make it to the campsite unless I wanted to trudge through the sludge but I have also been up there when the water level was so high we could paddle across Siwash Island. Of course the tides and the runoff of Pitt Lake affect Widgeon and it’s a bit difficult to predict but it’s still worth going to see the flora and the lovely birds and the occasional bear.

Hi Evan, we have a Seward Gemini that you are welcome to borrow. It is smaller than a Passat and holds less but very easy to manage for one adult with a kid. I would also be interested in connecting to do trips with kids together. We have a 9yo boy who longs for company.

I add four hours to the Point Atkinson tide table, which seems to work well in general. The water level of Pitt Lake will affect this rule slightly.  I hope that this helps.
