Cate’s Park World Ocean Day Clean up Walk
    When: June 8, 2024 from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM

World Ocean Day is Saturday 8 June 2024.

Come contribute to One Ocean, One Climate, One Future.

Join Sea Kayaking Association of BC on World Ocean Day at beautiful Cate’s park for a park and shoreline clean up.

Cates Park is the largest waterfront park in North Vancouver. Its ancestral name is Whey-ah-Wichen, which is a Tsleil-Waututh word that means “faces the wind”.

Cates Park is one of my favourite local parks to launch a kayak from.

It’s a great way to connect with nature and your local community.
When: Saturday 8 June 2024, 10 am by the picnic shelter by the boat launch.

    Duration: 1-3 hours.

Lots of free parking or close to bus route.

    Washrooms available

Bring a water bottle and a snack. We will be walking 1-3 km.
The district of North Vancouver is happy to support litter clean up events by providing equipment such as garbage bags, gloves, and litter pickers.

If you have a pair of gloves please bring your own.

Need at least 5 volunteers or even will be cancelled

Tonight’s club meeting time has been changed to 7:30 — a Zoom link is below.

We welcome guest speaker Elizabeth Purdon who will be speaking about her 14 paddling trips to Baja.

Elizabeth is a retired family physician from Victoria that is a confirmed Baja addict, having been on fourteen kayak trips there! She has Paddle Canada Level 4 Skills and Level 2 Instruction and is a kayak instructor with the South Island Sea Kayak Association. Her Baja trips have been mostly guided, but a few have been self-supported. During her presentation she will review when, where, why and how to go on a kayak trip in Baja.

Hi Nick, I am planning to buy crabbing gear and get my yearly fishing licenses, so I would be interested in grabbing from you instead of purchasing new.  Thanks Tania

I’ve become aware of this announcement

    “June 5 @ 11:00 am – 5:30 pm
Thormanby Island Clean: Halfmoon Sea Kayaks
FREE KAYAK RENTALS FOR VOLUNTEERS! Next Wednesday, June 5th, Halfmoon Sea Kayaks is partnering with the Sunshine Coast Conservation Association to clear the South shores of Thormanby Island of the ocean debris that drifts up the Salish Sea through the winter storm season. Beach cleanups are crucial for preserving marine ecosystems and preventing further pollution. ”

I’m trying to get more info. I’m hoping to join this effort, hopefully  with some SKABC volunteers. As you likely know, we’re trying to improve things at Simson Prov Park and I’m keen to ‘recruit’ assistance from among these public-spirited locals.

Pl contact me if you are interested in joining me – for a long day trip or possibly an overnighter.

btw, Nancy, in response your question this time, for top quality work on all boat related laminates, I’ve heard Blackline Marine near Sydney are excellent. 2300 Canoe Cove Rd, North Saanich, BC V8L 3X9. No personal experience of them but their reputation is high. I’m not saying there are none locally, however.

Here’s a thought. Kevlar (aramid) laminates are thinner and more flexible than glass fiber laminates, but I believe they mostly use the same top layer of  gelcoat, which itself  is not structural. It is quite common for a kevlar laminate to have a surface crack that is only the surface layer and has not affected the underlying structure. You still need to repair it, because you don’t want water penetrating the structural layer and weakening it through delamination.  How similar the gelcoat is in both laminates I’m unsure: standard gelcoat and standard fibreglass use a polyester resin whereas the kevlar laminate needs a more expensive, more hazardous epoxy resin, which normally does not bond well with a (cured) polyester resin, but I expect the builders get around  this incompatibility by adding the epoxy-bonded layers to the mold before the gelcoat has cured, hence getting a v solid bond.

Sorry – this might be pure b.s. and is certainly more than you wanted to know!
