Kapila Jayaweera
My bad, I didn’t realize we are doing party January this time. That’s OK, we could still do a fun entertaining play sessions.
Please post, contact me for volunteers that can play, sing or whatever they can do to get it going. Nothing serious, just wanted to see whether we can do something different this year.
Quirine SchuyffI love this idea. I don’t think I trust my own guitar playing or singing to do so as entertainment, but fully support anyone that wants to do this!
I love the idea of Christmas carols myself but it won’t be that theme this year!
AdminHi, interesting idea and generous of you to offer. I guess the Social Committee will consider how it would fit in with the party plans. Also to clarify, it will be a “Fiesta” them held January 11 so not very Christmasy this time.
Kapila JayaweeraHi Kelly,
I could help DJ work. Let me dig into some of my music.
Helen ClementI can sing and would love to Xmas carol with you all!
Kapila JayaweeraI am wondering whether we have any musicians in our club that can play instruments. Also people can sing. May be we could do a little concert type event just for a fun of it to see how it goes.
I could play few songs on my guitar that I am practicing. I won’t feel bad if I screw up if others available to join.
I remember we had few Christmas parties with live band playing, also Christmas carols, that was fun.
Open to any feedbacks
Nick HeathHere’s an update on the position of BCMT on Flower Island.
Several years ago the Namgis had requested that the site not be displayed on our map because of overuse/degradation. It is in a Prov Park, so BCMT’s process is to also consult the land manger, BC Parks, then to make a decision on the map display. For reasons that are not clear, this consultation did not happen until recently. BC Parks appear to have little interest in the site and seem uncertain if the island was included in the Park. Many Parks now come under co-management. Decades ago, Parks were all too often created without much consultation with local FNs.
BCMT decided to display the site as ‘Closed’ on their map. I doubt there will be any further action taken by either Namgis or Parks to enforce an overnight stay site closure, although this is unknown. So the ‘closure’ will likely discourage some paddlers who otherwise might have planned to camp here, but maybe won’t actually reduce usage, although that remains to be seen. I would have preferred a different outcome.

Kelly RobertsonI foolishly offered to provide music for our volunteer dinner, but lack DJ skills. Can anyone recommend an appropriate playlist for the occasion? No dancing will be involved, we just need background dinner music. Thanks!
KellyAdminPlease sign up asap if you’re heading out to Western Canoe and Kayak’s Demo Day for SKABC and PIKA members at Buntzen Lake! Go to the Events List on the website to register.
Mick AllenReferring to the map below, it is interesting that the sold portion is the upland portion and not the 33 [maybe 32?] acre waterfront portion. And with the final wording from metro on the website referenced by Mark:
With the withdrawal of the rezoning application, the engagement process is now closed. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback. Details on the engagement process and what we heard is available in the engagement summary reports below.
. . . it may be closed, but there will still be 33 acres of waterfront property going to be just sitting there for . . . trails? As the now larger conservancy blocks off access to the metro portion – is that metro portion now just water access [ahem]? . . . like another park not so far away?

and right at the most eastern corner of that remaining section is about the only potential for water access:

anyway, just ponderings . . .

I think you are being too generous. This is Metro’s statement: (I added the emphasis)
Metro Vancouver had applied to Bowen Island Municipality for rezoning and a change to the Official Community Plan to allow for overnight tent camping. The rezoning application remains at first reading, and with the sale Metro Vancouver will withdraw its application.
AdminIf you haven’t already signed up for the AGM, please do so before 6:30 pm Monday. It’s easy – log into the SKABC website, click on the meeting link, sign up and you’ll receive your own Zoom link by email.
Tomorrow we welcome our own Steve Best who will present on Howe Sound with featured video by Mike McHolm.
Also, Neil Trouton from Western Canoe & Kayak has invited SKABC and PIKA members to a demo day on Saturday Nov. 9th at Buntzen Lake. He will join us to speak about this opportunity.
There will also be an election, awards, and announcements. Hope to see you there.
Mark StoakesThat doesn’t seem to be the case. According to the MetroVancouver website, of the original 95hectares they purchased, 65hectares have been sold to the Bowen Island Conservancy. For the remaining 32hectares, MetroVan has applied for rezoning to allow overnight tenting. That’s how I interpret their posting.
Nick HeathYes it is disappointing that the proposed campsite now seems to be a dead duck. That’s enough from me on this topic. I won’t say what I truly think because it will only get us embroiled in controversy once more, and that is no fun. All SKABC Forum discussions are open to the trolls of the (under)world!
