    Hi Peter

I transitioned around there a couple of years ago whilst doing a trip around Saturn’s and The Penders. I was unable to find a current chart for the reef so took it at the nearest low tide. We approached from between Tumbo and Saturna, the reef looked calm with no standing a waves, eddies or apparent rips. Initially it was calm and easy as we gave it a wide berth want remained that way but the current was in flowing and strong. It took the two of us  in singles, and strong paddlers half and hour to make enough headway to clear the point and round it enough to get onto the kelp and make easier headway.

I’ve never been back, want to because Navares is a great camp site but my lesson was that in future, if I don’t know if currents find out before venturing somewhere that’s known for strong currents. We could easily hand turned and made it back but didn’t want to but will never try that again until I know which is ebb and when.

Good luck with the trip and if you find out how to chart the currents there please share.

Meet at Porteau Cove at 9am for a 9:30 launch. Paddle around Anvil Island. Wear immersion gear–(wet suit) as it can get windy, hence bumpy……

Bring a lunch and extra clothes.

In transiting from Cabbage Island to Narvaez Bay, what is the optimum

tide/current condition to navigate between Saturna and Boiling Reef ? Or is it better to skirt it on the outside ? I’m doing this in a very stable 23 foot tandem (Aleut II) but never having paddled this side of Saturna, I wanted to ask the question.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I want to thank every one for the great advice.I bought a plastic 13″ Prijon Catelina ,from Western Canoe and Kayak. It would cost $75  to rent boats, and the boat cost $1175,so you know .I would be  paying rent and it could add up quick.I’m happy with the boat, but I can”t believe the diffrance from white water to sea, even the roll ,you have to have perfect form,as there is no give.a white water play boat is 6″ long and light ,if your form isn”t perfect athe bow or stern or edge will give you some foregivness .I felt as where tied to a log .Oh well the best thing”s in life are what you accomplish by learning, and I’m exited to learning this sport.maps, compass, tide charts, landing and launching in waves.I know one step at a time.I love it.Thanks again Gerry.

    Hi Gerry,

Wow, there isn’t much I can add, Geza provided you with excellent and logical information; my only comment/suggestion would be to try different kayaks before buying.  Figure out what you like and don’t like then look for the boat that suits you best based on the features that you’ve determined to be important to you.  Many Kayak outfitters sell gently used boats at the end of the season, you might find that to be a good option and it would certainly provide you with the ability to try several boats in close succession and enable you to eliminate those that are not a good fit and narrow down your search.

I hope this helps a little.

    Cheers,

    Chantal
