Hi Jake – I am new to SKABC and a fairly inexperienced paddler but I’m keen to be out on the water! I will be in Vancouver during the week the whole of July but will be busy in the mornings. If you are interested in afternoon and/ or evening paddles then I’m in! I have my own kayak but it will have to stay home ( in Agassiz) because I have nowhere to store it in Vancouver, so if I could share your double that would be great. have all my gear.
Please let me know what you think,
Elinor
June 23, 2017 at 1:44 am in reply to: Short Notice Paddles. Personal trips not officially sponsored by SKABC #13526Jake StoneI’m an intermediate, leisurely paddler with about 6 years experience. I’m a family man, in my fifties, and pretty easy-going when it comes to choosing routes and places to stop etc etc.
I am looking for partners who are interested in day paddles from Vancouver (e.g., Indian Arm, Bowen and Paisley Islands, Widgin Creek etc etc). If you have a kayak great. If not, I have a double.
Through July, my time is flexible but I prefer weekdays if possible (fewer summer power boaters).
Contact me through this list if you are interested in finding a time and destination. We can take it from there.
best

Ellen WoodHi Anja, I can’t commit right now but please keep me in mind. My preference would be the Bunsbys but I’m open to other trips. I’ve done Brooks a couple of times but we always just passed through the Bunsbys.
Clark Perry-BaterHi Anja, I’m interested in an August trip. One place I haven’t paddled in but would like to investigate is the Deer Group in Barkley Sound. I will be available after Aug. 1, but my car won’t be available (my wife needs it for work). Let’s talk!

Philip KubikHello Joan,
I have two such systems in my garage. Someone involved with construction inspection told me that if there is anything above the fire sprinklers a pullye system could contravene fire regulations in an underground parking lot.
In any event, in my garage I use pulley system at the front and one at the rear of the kayak. A carabiner on the bottom pulley is clipped to a loose fitting webbing sling which goes around the kayak. The bottom pulley is double as is the one above, attached to the rafters. In addition, I have single pulleys to guide the rope to the side of the garage and along the wall.
4 mm rope is strong enough but a bit uncomfortable on bare hands when raising the kayak. 6 mm rope is probably a good choice. 9 mm rope has a nice feel but is bulky, more expensive, and requires larger pulleys. I used cheap pulleys from Canadian Tire but some stores may not carry double pulleys of a suitable size.
On the weekend, I can send you some photos.

Joan JonesHi all, I would like to know how to store kayaks above a parking space in an underground parking area. I have heard of pulley systems that allow one to park with kayaks on roof of car and then raise them up for storage. Can anyone comment on how this is done? How to install such a system? Photos would also be very helpful. Thank you, Joan Jones

Personal trips not officially sponsored by SKABC #13472Randy ChatterjeeIf you are coming down to Paddlefest Saturday June 17 at Jericho Beach (just east of Locarno Sailing Centre), consider bringing your kayak for a quick spin. After SKABC volunteers entertain the crowd twice with “how much beer can we pack in a kayak, and where” (aka proper kayak packing techniques), some of us are going to head out after packing up our booth and just for two hours in English Bay or False Creek. We’ll launch at 4:00 and some of us plan to share dinner at 6:30 on the upper deck at the Locarno Galley Grill facing out into English Bay. I’ve alerted our 537 Meetup followers (the “front porch of the SKABC house”) and so several potential new members will be going out with us, either in their own kayaks or in rentals from EcoMarine. Come for a paddle or just join us for a scrumptious dinner and sunset!

Peter KearneyHi Jonas,
Have you considered paddling the ‘Round Bowen Challenge’ sat June 24?

Cheers, Peter (doing the 1/2 way round race)
Marina DodisHi Nicole,
I was wondering if there was another outfit because of having to stack the boats (we have more than 4 boats). Since it is a wet launch the boats would have to be fully loaded. Do you have experience with stacking loaded boats regarding damage, etc?
Thanks!
AdminHi Marina,
Out of Secret Cove you could use Buccaneer Marina Water Taxi at 1-877-885-7888. Ask for Christina. She has told me $300 each way. 4 boats (17′ feel long) or up to 8 boats if you are willing to stack them. They don’t have a rack built yet for boats.
Hope that helps. Have an awesome trip!
Cheers,
Nicole -
