Thanks again to everyone – this was very helpful!

Still searching for real estate that will allow trailers in the parkade. Not all do and some expressly forbid it, so I have to search through the strata docs right away. With so few properties for sale, I still don’t know where I will end up but I’ll keep at it!

Hi again, A month ago I was very interested in doing an extended trip this August, as I indicated above. Unfortunately, in the intervening time, my torn Achilles’ tendon has not been healing as quickly as I hoped it would, and this past week I pulled my right hamstring badly slipping on a wet rock on the beach on Saltspring, so now I’m having trouble walking properly. So I don’t think I’m ready for a wilderness kayak trip (unless someone really likes carrying a heavy guy up the beach with all his gear!).  Hopefully I’ll be ready for some new adventure next year!

Hi Lynn, I was camping on Saltspring last week and came across a Dutch guy who is cycling around North, Central and South America. He is using a solar charger called RAV POWER (24-watt version). Here’s the link https://www.ravpower.com/24w-foldable-solar-charger.html. He thinks it’s great. I plan to buy one – $80 US on Amazon. I tried it and in full sun it charged my iPhone 25% in about 45 minutes, much faster than my small Solio charger. It folds up into a small format. It says it will charge on cloudy days, but I have no idea how quickly. It has 3 USB ports to charge items simultaneously, but if you need to charge batteries for a camera and a VHF radio, I don’t know if you can get a USB -chargeable battery charger. Some VHF radios have an accessory that allows you to use AA batteries. Does your radio have that?

    Hi Lynn,

I bought a Goal Zero Nomad 7 solar charger with the extra battery pack but find that it works better to solar charge a power bank (plugged in to USB port on solar charger) and then use the charged power bank to charge my phone, because iPhones don’t charge well off solar.  If you need charged batteries the extra battery pack will charge 4xAA or 4xAAA batteries.  But you really need direct sun for a few hours a day…not sure if you will get that in a rainforest.

Does anyone have any input on what would be the best method/system/device to use to charge things while out on the water. We are heading out for a 10 day paddling trip to Haida Gwaii and want to be able to charge cell phones, camera (no usb) and the marine radio. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi!

I am very interested, I was looking to go around Vargas island this summer, but I was looking for a shorter trip (assuming you meant Saturday aug 12) or over the weekend.

I’ll check if I can free myself for the week.

Theresa Davies and I are planning a quick trip to Vargas Island beginning Tuesday Aug. 8th coming back Saturday Aug. 9. The Idea is to stake camp on Vargas and make day trips to adjacent islands.  Theresa and I have vehicles capable of hauling 2 kayaks each. Vargas is accessible from Tofino so plan would be catch the first ferry to Nanaimo, drive to Tofino, and paddle to Vargas on the outside route. People on this trip must be used to navigating in fog and landing in  surf. Classification 3C.  The rule is early paddling days to avoid high winds in afternoons.  Call Ron Simmer (604 803 5937) or Theresa  (778 870 6043.)  Research studies indicate the wolves on Vargas have given up eating old kayakers since they are too tough to chew.

    Cheers

    Hi Anja,

Great to hear from you!  Sorry I missed your email and did not reply sooner! An easier river like the last part of the Squamish can be done in a sea kayak, however there are shallow spots, and if sudden turns a re needed to avoid trees, that can be an issue. The fraser and Harrison river are very doable in sea kayaks.

How much white-water or river paddling have you done? Paddling with an experienced paddler in a tandem canoe is very doable if you are a total beginner, but white water solo canoeing or kayaking requires so pre-training.

    My next available days are:

August 12: Would be very good to join the Beaver Canoe club Cheakamus River (paradise valley). That is one of the most fun beginner white-water trips. Lower Squamish is more of a scenic paddle. For river trips more than one boat is preferable for safety. I would rent a white-water tandem canoe, unless you have some experience and prefer to paddle a single?

August 19. Would have to do a paddle ourselves or post on the Vancouver white-water forum for others to join. Vancouver white-water club is mainly kayakers (and the new activity whitewater SUP and rafters).

The VWC does not have another beginner trip until September.

    Any Saturday from September 9

    Cheers.

Would anyone be interested in a trip up Jervis inlet? It will be an exploratory trip for me. I paddle around 25 km/day, move camp every day.
