Hello fellow paddlers!

You should have got a reminder this morning of the coming club Xmas party. For this year I would like to put together a photo presentation (and maybe include some quick video clips) of your best photos from this year’s activities.

Of course you will have photos on the water, but any club events are welcome too. If you have images or video to submit, please email me directly allan.edwin@gmail.com and I will send you a link to a folder you can upload to. I’d like for this to be a surprise, so there will not be a giant shared folder for everyone. Same rules as for gifts: No Peeking!

With your images, please include – who/when/where, because I know there will be plenty of “omigosh wow! who/where/when was that!?” reactions.

Have a good time going through your archives. Looking forward to hearing from you all.

It looks it’s going to be George, Ted, Vincent and Martin and friend, with Theresa a maybe at this point.

We’ll start at Stearman Beach near Caulfield in West Vancouver. Google Maps will take you there. Let’s aim to be on the water at 10:30 – plan your arrival time based on how long it will take you to get organized once you’re there. The plan is to paddle around Point Atkinson and further on towards Whytecliff and then back. I expect we’ll paddle for two or three hours (four at the most) with a lunch stop somewhere in the middle. The forecast is for relatively strong winds earlier in the morning and again in the evening but it’s supposed to be relatively calm in the middle of the day when we’ll be paddling.

Congratulations George! I’m sure you’re jumping out of your skin to get your new boat in the water for a proper paddle.

My weekend is already booked, so I won’t be able to come along. I’ll be waiting for the pics.

I just got a new boat and am eager to try it out.  I’m planning to launch at Caulfield Cove at around 10:00 a.m. on Sunday and paddle around Point Atkinson (Lighthouse Park) and then further along the West Vancouver shore toward Whytecliff Park before returning to the put-in.  If conditions permit I might venture out to Passage Island, too.  Total paddling time will be two or three hours and there will be a stop for lunch somewhere along the way.

If you’re interested I can be flexible about starting time and even location.  Another alternative would be to start at Jericho and paddle around Point Grey to Wreck Beach and beyond.

Hello, Nick,

Thanks, Heather!  I stopped for lunch. Grassy area in front of the cabin. Slippery rocks and mostly rocky landing, near the cabin. Did not explore the island or see an outhouse near the cabin. I believe that day visits were ok; overnights not encouraged or allowed, as it was a private island. I may be corrected on this point.

Good addition to the park. Thank you provincial government!

When you say you can’t camp there, do you mean that there are no suitable sites for tents or hammocks?

I don’t remember a toilet on the island and you can’t camp on it.  Monty Drake, who is a SKABC member, did a currents course in that area recently. He may be able to give you more details.He lives in Powell River as I do.  I think the landing is pretty rocky and in wet weather the rocks are slippery. A steady stream of yachts drop passengers off to tour the “museum”.

Many members will have visited the private South Octopus I, with its cabin full of memorabilia. including a SKABC/PIKA group in 2018.

This island has been bought by the Province for over $1M to add to the Prov Park. Marine Parks Forever Society (Council of BC Yachts Clubs) contributed over $100K.

I’d appreciate receiving some details – not of the cabin itself but rather of the landing and other pats of that island. Is there is a toilet there already? Did you camp there and if so, exactly where?

It will be a while before BC Parks makes this island ready for public use, but for BC Marine Trails  I’d like to gather some info in advance and maybe assist with planning how it is to be done.

This is welcome news for paddlers!

That’s great guys. Let’s put a plan together and then see what the weather does.

• Shorter daylight hours = local destinations and overnight, to make the outing worth the effort.
• Low temps = sites allowing a campfire. No fires allowed in Indian Arm, so that’s out.

Options:

• West Vancouver to Gambier Island or Keats Island
• Langdale to West Howe Sound
• Porteau Cove to West or North Howe Sound

Soonest weekends available for me will be early December, then January or February.
