I did the Port Hardy to God’s Pocket area back in 2010, so my information might be stale.  We launched out of the harbour in Port Hardy, then traveled up to Songhees Creek before making the crossing over to Nolan Point, which is a well established site and well protected from most storms.  The site already had lots of packed areas for tents,  as well as cobbled-together drift materials made into a kitchen and seating area.  We appreciated this.  We used this site as our base for three nights before moving up to Vansittart Island (sadly, no longer an allowed stop) where we stayed until the weather forecast forced our hand to return to Nolan Point, and then a hot shower, cold beer, and soup in Port Hardy.

I was there last summer and paddled in God’s pocket. we parked at the marina in Port Hardy and launched there as well. It was great as we could launch at higher low tide without a problem. And the car was secure for the week. We had looked at carrot Park, but the Carrie was huge and we couldn’t find parking. It was well worth the cost of the parking.

FYI our last night we stayed on the bcmt site onMasterman Islands. We camped on the upper part of the beach site. It happened to be a king tide, and we did not get flooded! But we did have our chance as far up as we could get them and got up in the middle of the night to check! I thought I’d save you that in case you camp there.

I just measured the length of the (very standard-looking) tensor bandage in my first aid kit. It’s 1.6 meters. There are very similar ones at my local Canadian Tire. They have 11 in stock. They’re a similar length to mine. Would you like to get some of these so that we have tensor bandages in the kits, even though they’re not as long as Transport Canada states? Let me know if you’d like me to pick some up.

We will need to update our first aid kits. As you know we simply followed the guidelines. Ommisions like this should be reported as trips leaders notice so we can remedy the situation. I will update the contents at the end of the year when we have our annual trip leader meeting.

Until then, we are all aware and can update our own kits as we feel fit.

Trip leaders should be aware that our First Aid Kits may not contain any tensor bandage, as used commonly to control swelling and provide bracing in the event of a joint sprain. Transport Canada’s requirement, which we have tried our best to meet, is for “4 m of elastic bandage”.

Our kits have 2 “compression” bandages/dressings (that I recall were once known as  “shell dressings”) but these are different and are used for bleeding wounds.

We needed the elastic tensor bandage on a recent trip, but fortunately members had some in their personal kits.

I expect this item is missing from all of the SKABC kits, because the printed list of contents did not show this item. I think the terminology used in describing items has led to some minor confusion.

Well, the wind had other plans. While the spirit for Boats & Burgers was strong, safety made the call.

We shifted into the “garage” of Howe Sound instead with good work on the sites, great food, and even better company.

Conditions were a great reminder that Howe Sound always has the final say, so Boats & Burgers still awaits.

We are looking for volunteers to support the SKABC Big Brothers Big Sisters Paddle event taking place on Sunday July 26, 2026 at Rocky Point Park. This is a fantastic opportunity to give back to the community while being part of a fun and meaningful day on the water.

We are seeking volunteers to assist with event setup, participant coordination, registration, and general support throughout the day. Whether you can help for a few hours or the full day, your time and effort will make a real difference in ensuring the success of this event.
