Just letting you know we officially announce our race. And already have 10 swimmers registered! We’ve only gotten responses from two kayakers so far. Could you please share this link. We are officially going to be offering $65 honorarium to all kayakers. As well as food and snacks during the event! We have also purchase additional insurance for the kayakers. We will know soon regarding the details of the policy. As we will still recommend kayakers to have their own insurance as well.

I did hear about the station parking which is an option too. Our event is based on shifts so we will likely be moving cars at different points during the day. I also emailed the city of Port Moody with my concerns of lack of long term parking! Glad you did so too.

Having recently attended a SKABC paddle in Port Moody at the Rocky Point area I also ran into parking issues. My experience was park parking for non-boat users, as well as street parking in the area was limited to 4 hours.

I wanted to share an exert of a response I received from the City of Port Moody’s parks department after I reached out to them with respect to the lack of longer-term parking.

“You may or may not be aware, but park users can drop off their kayaks at the short term drop off area located next to the pier (a designated areas is currently signed) and then park all day at the Moody Centre/West Coast Express lot, which is a 5 minute walk across the overpass. I believe the cost is $3 for the pay parking.”

I email you weather course additional information letter your way to get an idea.
I am planning to go on Friday 26th with few other people to have an extra day at Newcastle.

Walk on at 8:45am ferry from Horseshoe Bay. I can help if you can come on Friday.
If not, I can link up with the other group taking Saturday 27th 8:45am ferry.

Either you can park car at Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal or Brechin boat launch 5 minutes away from Departure Bay ferry terminal. Their parking are inexpensive.

It is only 30 minutes paddle form Brechin boat launch to Newcastle Island camp site. Very nice Island, there are lots of paddling options or go for nice trail walks.

I would like to come but am struggling with the logistics because I would be on my own driving from Squamish, have never kayak-walked on the ferry, never been to Newcastle island. When are others going, which ferry, could I get a bit of help with the boat, either walking it on the ferry or parking in Nanaimo?

I called the North Vancouver fire department and they don’t take them. I also called the North Vancouver RCMP office and they also don’t take them.

I was given the contact information for DSS Protection (formerly Fitz Wright Disposal). It costs them $7 to dispose of the flares. If you buy one, you can dispose of 1 for no extra cost. 778-785-7848. 1850 Hartley Avenue, Coquitlam, Unit 4.

BCMT map is your best info source, Susan, (but I am biased). Most folks would start/finish at Cougar Ck, but be aware that it is often very busy. Pay parking available there. SKABC had a trip to Nootka Sd many years ago and camped at several of the sites incl. Escalante Pt N, Charlie’s Bch, Yuquot also Hoiss Ck, but the latter is no longer sanctioned for use by the local FN. Heather Harbord’s guide is still relevant. We encountered some heavy fog and some sports fishing boats. I needed my air horn. Mostly the paddling & camping were excellent. We didn’t try Burdwood Bay but if the swell is ok it might be super.

In September of 2021 we launched from Tuta Marina and paddle to Escalate Point. The Marina had no staff and only a handful of RV’s. We had Escalate Point all to ourselves. There is an old cabin by the river you can check out and we walked part of the Nootka trail for a short distance.

I am planning to practice rolling at Sasmat Lake this Saturday morning.

Meet up 9:00am at White Pine beach parking lot F, then use kayak carts to take boats to the beach.

Usual practice time is about two to three hours.

Parking lot F coordinates are (49.32630912976036, -122.88562416505222)

Bring Kayak cart, wet or dry suit, gloves etc.

Having goggles, nose plugs and ear plugs are helpful when practicing. These are options items that makes you comfortable underwater.

I am not a qualified instructor to teach rolling or rescue lessons. This is good for the people already taken some rolling lessons, wanted to practice what they learn.

Parking at Sasamat Lake on Saturday could be busy, please arrive at 9am to secure parking spot.
