June guest speaker links — FYI

Many thanks to guest speakers Norm Hann and John Kimantas who spoke at our virtual club meeting on June 7.

John gave information on BC Marine Trails' Site Assessment Program.

Norm's excellent film Howe Sound can be found here: https://normhann.com/2019/10/howe-sound-short-film/

Here's a link to the VSSL “vessel” first-aid kit Norm showed: https://vsslgear.ca/products/vssl-first-aid

Subscribe to Norm’s newsletter on his website and he’ll send you his Nifty Nine must-pack items for mult-day paddling trips.

Norm also spoke of weather forecasts from Environment Canada. He also uses the hourly reports* from the Pam Rocks weather station.

*Our director Nick Heath explains "These are not forecasts but are real time reports, updated hourly. On the day one is paddling, they can be useful to tell you what is happening a few miles away, which can be quite different from at one's start point and these are also good if one is heading in that direction. They can also give you a pattern to check if today's weather is more or less similar to yesterday's and if the wind shifted yesterday from outflow to inflow at 11 am then it probably will be similar today etc - but they are not hourly forecasts. The data are available for 24 hrs then are archived for ever, but can still be easily retrieved, as for all other BC coast weather stations (when they are working properly)".

Celebrate BC Trails Day and World Oceans Day

BC Trails Day on June 5th - film night coming up

The first ever BC Trails Day was on Saturday June 5th.   SKABC supports this initiative by the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC to recognize the importance of our trails (land and water!). This has been especially true during the pandemic!

Information https://www.orcbc.ca/bctrailsday/

Events List https://www.orcbc.ca/events/category/bc-trails-day/

Facebook https://www.facebook.com/orcbc.ca

A themed film night is being organized for SKABC members. Stay tuned for details.

World Ocean's Day on June 8th - submit your photos

June 8th marks the beginning of World Ocean's Week which is a worldwide event of the United Nations to celebrate and conserve the world's oceans. This coincides with 'The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup' https://shorelinecleanup.ca/, an event that members can participate in by joining existing cleanups or making your own. Some communities are not encouraging group cleanups this year due to COVID so please use the appropriate precautions.  The BC Marine Trails group is encouraging all clubs to be a part of World Oceans Week and to send your photos to WOW@bcmarinetrails.org.  Please be sure to note that you are from SKABC!

Trailers for Part 2 of Waterwalker Film Night (May 14)

Here are descriptions and trailers for the films to be shown May 14 at a FREE online event for club members.

Goodbye Olympic – Set in Iran, this film is about a young female flatwater kayaker who, against all odds, is trying to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games. As well as following the ups and downs of her story, the film offers a fascinating closeup look at everyday life in small-town Iran.

River Kingdom – Three westerners and their Cambodian friend set out on a journey through rural Cambodia. Their goal is to paddle the Srepok River, a tributary of the mighty Mekong. However, their expedition comes to a quick halt when the river takes an unexpected turn. Then, just when they think their journey is over, a new and very different adventure begins. This film shows a sweet and joyful side of humanity as two cultures come together in unexpected circumstances, and it offers an inside look at life in a small Cambodian village.

Toutan Rider – Set in a small town on the Iran/Afghanistan border, this film focuses on Dadkhoda, an old man who has spent much of his life building and using toutans, a type of traditional reed boat that has been used in the region for millennia. Although modern boats are making them obsolete, Dadkhoda insists on using traditional methods and materials to build one last toutan. As the story unfolds, we get a glimpse of a vanishing way of life, and, again, we get an intimate view of life in small-town Iran, although it’s a life much different from that shown in Goodbye Olympic. (There is no trailer available for this film.)

Spirit of Jaguar – Three adventurers set out into the Amazon jungle to deliver malaria medicine to members of the Hodi tribe. Once they make contact, they undertake a difficult trek to the tribe’s jungle village where they spend several weeks. The Hodi are isolated enough that they still maintain their traditional lifestyle, meeting all of their needs from the jungle around them and showing a deep respect for nature and its balance. Living communally in peace and harmony they in many ways represent the opposite of our western culture. This is an intimate and absolutely fascinating view of a vanishing way of life.
