Anyone interested in a paddle from Strathcona Park to Twin Islands and back? Tuesday July 11th. Meet at Strathcona Park at 8:30AM to launch at 9AM. 3ish hours with a snack break.

If you have your boats on a car, one suggestion is to set off from the Gibson’s marina to the Marine park on the west side of Keats Island, although it involves a crossing.

Another option is to drive to Sechelt, to the Porpoise Bay provincial park, and set off from there going north beyond Tawanek (sp?). That bay is more sheltered, but does get wind at times making hard to paddle south.

The family is spending a few days at an Airbnb near Gibsons.  Any suggestions for a good place to put the yaks in the water and/or a good place for  a short paddle? (2 to 4 hours, my wife and I have been paddling for a couple of years)

Not sure if you have heard, but Coast Outdoors is hosting Freya Hoffmeister, July 7 6:30 at   Coast Outdoors.  This will be Freya’s first talk and slide show since pre-covid.

If you don’t know Freya she is one of a kind and probably the all-time greatest kayak explorer.  She paddled around that small south pacific island, …..Australia.  In that trip she crossed the Gulf of Carpenteria. 800km  SOLO!!

She has also circumnavigated South America, and after this talk she’ll be heading off to Tuktoyatuk to start her paddle through the NW Passage.

In the past Freya’s has made two presentations for us with 150 plus people in attendance.  She’s very entertaining.

Way back before COVID restrictions we used to run a beginners course in the pool. We had to stop because of unreasonable insurance requests. It will be nice if things have been sorted out.  Lord Byng is still open to kayaks on a Friday 8.00pm to 9.00pm. There is a minimal charge and there used to be a cap on the number of kayaks allowed. First come basis.

Find a buddy or 2 and arrange your own practice. It is free time and you can do whatever you like. If they allow rolling practice, they cannot deny rescue practice.

The other thing about calling using as cell phone rather than a VHF is that they can pinpoint your location precisely, even if the location you give to the Coast Guard is incorrect. This could save significant time for the rescuers to reach you.
