I did buy one a while back from MEC (returned the next day) and when I got it home to try it out it seemed like it was near impossible to get the top closed, which of course means smell gets out. Also, I’m guessing if a bear got hold of it he would take it for a walk with him. You’d still need to hang it high.

Where are you going? Some places won’t let you use these. I personally wouldn’t use the Ursack for bears.

Bears in Yosemite, I think, have learned to open the plastic bear bins too.

For small creatures I use plastic nut containers.

For black bears (which I rarely every see in all my trips into the mountains) I would use bins provided; hang food properly or use a bear bin.

If I were headed into grizzly country I would use a proper, expensive, large size bear bin. An absolute requirement in many spots. You can always put other stuff in it as you eat your food.

As for kayaking destinations, I have never had issues with bears in the places I’ve gone and we have stored in our boats.

I borrowed a BEARIKADE once and it is light, big and strong. But VERY expensive. If I were going to the Yukon, I’d buy one.

we have two 17.5 kayaks that we are looking to store.

we do not need access to these kayaks very often, maybe two or three times a year, we paddle our shorter plastic boats mostly for day/overnights – the touring boats are for longer trips

We did have storage in our condo complex, that that will change next year, so we’d like to get something lined up any time from now till early winter

think i’ve asked at all the obvious local options, they are all booked up

any leads, thoughts, hints appreacated

So…it says good for thich bear teeth…nit good for sharp pointy snafflehounds.  I think you could get an aluminum insert.

 

So up at 3000m elevation in Banff.  No animals in sight. Friends put their food in vestibules.  Mine under some rock plates.

When we returned from our climb….my food bag…the bit that stuck out from under rock was bitten into …left a jaw inprint on bag..my lg ziplock bag inside and 2 Apple Cider pouches got punchtures.  Also found one of our stoves 50ft away…mesh bag shredded…and Aluminum wind screen punctures.

 

What animal was it ? We saw day old  Grizzly prints higer up & a good km away….so not likely…Wolves ?? Marmot…didn’t see a single one up there.. ? Goat ? …any bigger animal would have had no trouble pulling the ursac out from under the rock plate…the jaw inprint was roughly 5cm by 3 cm.

I’m curious to know if other members have used the Ursack Major XL Bear Resistant Bag and what the experience was with it. I like that it’s not a fixed shape so could take up less room in my boat (or backpack when hiking) as I consume my food.

The plan is to launch from Jericho Pier again this Thursday, on the water from about 5:30 to 8:30PM.   This time we will head East, into False Creek, then back.     Please email me at starrant@telus.net if you are interested in joining.

In the future, the Weekly Westside may be held on alternating days, Thursday one week and another day the next week, led by Ellen Wood.    But this week Ellen is not available, so I am repeating with another Thursday paddle.

Four of us –Quirine, Paul, Ellen and myself–went for a very nice paddle in calm waters yesterday evening.    We were on the water shortly after 5:30, made it all the way to Wreck Beach, (where we saw lots of wildlife), and back by shortly after 8:30.    It seems some days of the week work better for some people, and we briefly discussed alternating days so that everyone gets a chance to paddle.    Let’s take the conversation about days and times offline from ‘Short Notice Paddles’ so we are not spamming everyone.   Anyone interested in participating in ongoing paddles from this location, please email me at starrant@telus.net.    Please indicate which day(s) you are available, which you prefer, and whether you would be able to do the coordinating for a particular day.   Happy paddling!

I’d be interested; my boat is stored at Burrard Marina, but I could paddle out and meet you if you were coming in that direction.

Tuesdays are probably better as Thursdays there are kayak races starting at Vanier or Jericho on alternating weeks.

Hi all,

So I plan to be at Jericho by 5:00PM this Thursday, and on the water from 5:30 PM.    It’s sort of a trial run as a “short notice paddle” this week.      Day and time of the “weekly” version still subject to change.

Easiest place to unload is the roundabout at the end of Discovery Street in front of Jericho Sailing Centre, launching boats from beside the Jericho pier.   Ample pay parking in the Sailing Centre lot;   possibly some free parking in the Locarno beach lots a walkable distance away.

Tide will be coming in.    If the wind is not too strong I would like to head West around Pacific Spirit, paddle for 1 or 1.5 hours and see how far we get, then head back for around 8 or 8:30PM.    If the wind is a little stronger (but still safe to paddle) we will head towards more sheltered waters in False Creek.

Hi there:

I have holidays and would like to do a paddle trip of at least a couple of nights; hopefully more.  My thoughts are Sechelt Inlet as it isn’t too far away. Perhaps Desolation Sound? I’m open to other ideas though. I need to be back in town for July 13th. Fairly flexible otherwise.

I am quite experienced with multi-day kayaking and back country camping. I’m not a guide, nor am I an expert kayaker, so I’d like folks who are around the same experience as I am.

If I find company we can meet and assure compatibility, solidify dates and transport. I have roof racks and can carry one more kayak and paddler (and two more passengers if people rent).

Used Extreme Interface double touring kayak made in BC (Qualicum Beach).  This boat is probably 20 years old but the hull is still in good shape.  Very solidly built and stable and large storage in aft, centre and bow hatches for extended touring.
