    WE GOT IT.  NO WORRIES.

Simone took it home I think.  She lives on the west side of Vancouver.  I’ll forward your contact info to her.

I left a small black back pack at the September meeting at the Sunrise Community Centre yesterday. Did anybody notice it ? Pick it up ? Take it home ? Turn it in ?

I will likely either get a ride to, or park at Horseshoe Bay, and then wheel my kayak onto the ferry.    At Nanaimo Departure Bay Terminal, there is a boat launch about 300 metres from the ferry slip, and Newcastle Island is even closer (although we have to paddle around the island to the far side (about 3 km).  IMHO, Having a car in Nanaimo is not particularly useful at all.  So, short of paddling the entire way across (which is what we are celebrating), rolling on the ferry is the next best route to get there.

I would myself love to carpool with people from the eastern lower mainland to split parking costs at Horseshoe Bay.

There is still space on this trip which was originally posted 4 weeks ago in the “Short Notice Paddles”

    Proposed trip is as follows:

Friday, Sept 8 – ferry to Nanaimo and launch at Cedar, paddle to Pirates Cove Marine Park on De Courcy Island (distance, 3.5 nm).  Day trips on Sat Sep 9 and return to Vancouver on Sun Sep 10 or Monday Sep 11.

Note:  option for some paddlers to join the group for Sat/Sun only, but I would like at least one person to launch with me on Friday so we can get a campsite for the group.

    Hi,

Anybody going to the Salish sea Marine trail grand opening on Newcastle island would like to carpool to Nanaimo to share the cost of the ferry? Leaving sometime on Friday Sep 15th, coming back Sunday afternoon.

For the record, Ambleside to Eagle Harbour (return) is 14nm.

Ambleside to Whitecliff return is more like 20nm.

Thanks to those who joined the paddle. Conditions were perfect, a slight breeze, with a nice bit of bounce around the point and a small surf landing on our return.

    Karin Hartner

Meet at Eagle Harbour at 9:30, launch at 10, ever respectful of ferries-cross to Bowen-Paddle the shore to the north end, stop for lunch and make our way back. With the high ridge established winds should be moderate and at our side for the crossing.

If you wish to join, contact Karin at   karinhartner@gmail.com

On the water at 8.00. Paddle to Whitecliff Park for lunch.

Trip classification 2c. Approx. 7nm each way so expect to be on the water about 6 hours, plus an hour for lunch. The trip can be shortened if we stop at Eagle Harbour instead.

The water around the point can be a bit bumpy so dress appropriately (wet or dry suit) and you must have already practiced a wet exit and re-entry this year.

High tide at 11.am and Low tide at 4.00pm DST with the usual summer wind expected in the afternoon.

Please phone or email me if you would like to join us, or have questions, and let me know you are coming so we know to wait for you. If everyone is early, we will leave early.

I know this really is last minute but wondering if anyone else was looking for a paddle this weekend? Last time I got several calls from kayakers that might’ve really enjoyed the trip but were unsure. Try again this time?

At the moment two of us are planning to park at Porteau at about 11 am, and head out towards Anvil Island and across Howe Sound to either Bain Creek if conditions are good, or Islet View campsites. If going to Bain Creek, then check out Anvil Islands south side on the way back and hopefully have a tail wind on the way back north to Porteau. We are planning to come back a little later so have more time on the water, or to hang out at camp. Depending on wind, come back to Porteau 4-7pm.

There are very few safe landing spots on the whole trip, including Anvil Island which is mostly cliffs. So have some experience doing a wet re-entry if needed, I’m planning to do some rescue practise at the campsite as well. If there is a wind warning and we show up and it really is windy we will look at going elsewhere in Howe Sound if needed.

    If interested please call 778 316 5747

Sorry I can’t text or check my email as really busy. I’m not following this forum to be clear – just give me a quick call if you’re interested

We can still call it the Strait of Georgia even tho’ its now part of the Salish Sea. Anyway to celebrate the opening of the Salish Sea Marine Trail (from Vancouver to Victoria or vice versa) on the weekend of 16 – 17 Sept some of us will be on Newcastle I near Nanaimo, with BC Marine Trails Network Assn other clubs and friends. What better way to travel to this than to paddle there along a section  of that same trail from the Lower Mainland, if not actually from Vancouver?

So are there any others with solid paddling experience who are interested in this route/schedule?

Tues 12 Sept Drive to Halfmoon Bay. Paddle to Thormanby I camping at Farm Bay (short day 3 NM)
Wed Paddle to  Lasqueti I  camping at Skinny Cv or Tall Fir Cv (moderate day 14 NM)
Thu Paddle to  Maude I  camping there or Southey I  (moderate day 13 NM)
Fri Paddle to Newcastle I (moderate day 10 NM)
Sat and Sun – event activity around Newcastle I Then take ferry home and arrange to recover car(s).
There are open water crossings of 4 NM and 5 NM. C3 rating or so.

To start in Vancouver requires another 2 days or so- maybe too long a commitment.
Pl let me know your interest via email      membership1@skabc(dot)org            Nick H.

If anyone is around False Creek Aug 8 -13, check out the paddle through camera obscura art piece that is there close to Science World. I was through there this evening and it was really neat experience.

Suggested trip is Alouette River, meet at Harris Road bridge at 10:00 am.  This is an easy paddle – the river is very slow.  Lots of birds, turtles, maybe deer and mountain views.  Contact Shelley at 604-437-1549 or shelleyxx99@gmail.com

In lieu of a monthly meeting, let’s meet at Locarno Beach for an informal BBQ and supper. Look for a yellow banner and a red BBQ nearby a picnic table. If this is your first time, the website event listing show the exact location.

A small BBQ will be provided so feel free to bring something for the grill and an appie or dessert to share (plus your own drink, plate and utensils). This is very informal. Some years people organize a little paddle before or after, so if you plan to bring your boat, let us know through this forum.
