My name is Sean Salo. I am going on the Broken Islands trip this May. My dad Bob and I have been looking for rental kayaks for me, with little luck. I am looking for 17 feet or longer sea kayak.

Western Canoe Kayak in Abbotsford says they are holding all their rental kayaks for a race that weekend. Deep Cove Kayak says they typically rent for shorter durations, and a >1 week rental will be very expensive. MEC says they are buying new rental boats but can’t confirm they will be ready to rent by that time.

If anyone knows of somewhere else I could rent for a week or more, or even an opportunity to buy a second hand kayak, please let me know. I would like to have this kayak procurement situation sorted long before out trip in just over a month.

That’s great Tony. Shall we meet at 8:30am on the ramp down from Rockcliff Road to the Deep Cove Kayak Centre? I will be in a grey Ford pickup with an orange Telkwa Sport kayak on top. I will pack a lunch. I should try to be back by 3:00pm at the latest.

Hi Thom, I would like to join you tomorrow. I am an experienced paddler (33 years ) and an experienced trip leader. I retired from leading SKABC trips after last year. I am a bit long in the tooth but I am still a reasonably strong paddler. I have been out a couple of times this year including doing the route that you are planning for tomorrow.

Short Notice. Time to clean out the spiders from your boat. A half day paddle, up Indian Arm from Deep Cove. Tomorrow, Monday, April 15th, start paddling from the kayak centre 9:00am. Destination to be a beach where one can make a cup of tea (or coffee). Dress warm and bring your kit to make tea and have snacks. Be prepared to tell salty stories.

I am not a leader for this, nor am I responsible for your safety. Beginners are welcome but you must be able to handle a sea kayak and have all safety gear.  Wet or dry suit is recommended. Be prepared for ANY weather. Warm hat, rain jacket, neoprene gloves, appropriate footwear to get your feet wet.

Public kayak sessions at Byng pool are on Fridays from 8 PM until 9 PM from September through November and January through mid-June, cxcluding holidays. The cost for each session is $6.41 per person (including tax), assuming that you bring your own kayak. As Maureen mentioned, you can rent a kayak but there is an additional charge. A maximum of 12 kayaks are permitted in the pool. Registration is in-person only starting at 7:30 PM prior to each session. It is best to register shortly after 7:30 in order to ensure that you get in, although attendance has been sparse recently.

Hi Tracy, It is better to take your own kayak. They have a few there, but they are old style river boat without sprayskirts and paddles are fixed at 90 deg.

Please ensure your kayaks are free of sand. There is a hose in the corner if you need to wash it.

Has anyone been to Lord Byng pool during the public Kayak drop-in? I want to take a friend there to practice wet exit/rescue but not sure if I can bring my own kayak, which entrance to go through etc. Any practical tips you could share would be appreciated.

I’m creating this topic to give people a place to organize rides for the Spring Fling trips on May 4.

I have my kayak stored at Burrard Marina and would appreciate a ride to either Cates or Deep Cove. I’m signed up for the Cates-Twin Island trip but am open to switching.

The weather seems to look ok just for today as does the wind. I would like to get on the water for a short paddle. I could be there by 5:30 but if there are others who need a later start I could push it to 6pm meeting?

I keep my boat there so would put in by EcoMarine where they also have started renting boats. Depending on who joins, time of put in, and wind direction,  it could be a paddle towards Wreck Beach (or as far as we get) or perhaps Siwash Rock, or Kits Beach.
