Hi Nick,  I love it!    A long while ago, room mates and I rented a metal detector and scoured the large property where we lived.  A very good time was had by all!   If you don’t find the posts you are likely to find some other cool stuff.

ps.  The Detectorists–a Britsh series is well worth the watch and no doubt will get you in the mood.

Some members know that this past Spring, with BC Park’s blessing, we posted about 30 temporary trail directional signs at Simson Park. However, most of these were promptly removed by person(s) unknown and for reasons that are unclear (although we have our suspicions). A quick check in summer and fall revealed none of them.

There is a fair chance that they were uprooted and then flung into the nearby bushes. With the leaves off those bushes and with a metal detector to help me find the steel rebar stakes that held them up, there is still some hope of recovering some of them and avoiding a week or two of laborious handwork on cedar boards, with router, stain and paint.

Why so flimsy and temporary in the first place? Firstly, many place names are unconfirmed and if we can collect feedback over 1 or 2 seasons, we’ll be more confident in the names and directions. Secondly, we are not permitted by Park policy to attach signs to trees nor are we  allowed to dig holes for posts unless a reg’d archaeologist observes all digging work for potential FN artifacts. Aargh!

I don’t know the likelihood of finding 1.2 m lengths of 15 mm steel rebar on the surface with a metal detector, but I assume it is quite high if we are within a meter or so. I’m not wanting to recover that rebar, just the cedar sign that might be in the same vicinity (but the detector will be unable to locate).

I plan to go to the Park in early Jan. Maybe this is a futile search…

    Advice? nheath(at)sfu.ca

Thanks to a generous member it looks like we’ll be making a shortish trip to Simson Park  early in the New Year, using a cabin at Buccaneer Bay for accommodation. There will be a total of 3 or maybe 4 of us, so there is no more room this time. No doubt there will be other trips!

Once again, I’m seeking a volunteer (or 2) to help me at Simson (S Thormanby I) to finish some work we didn’t complete in September, brushing trails.  The difference this time is that I’ve been offered the use of a cabin to stay in at Buccaneer Bay, so the winter camping experience is mitigated.

No firm plan in mind except to do this over 3 days some time soon or by New Year, preferably in a dry spell. Travel either by kayak or small power boat from Cooper’s Green or Brooks Cv. bringing our tools, sleeping bags, warm clothing and food.

Nothing extreme. Fairly flexible arrangement possible. Zero participant cost except for food.

I am selling my Atlantis Wav kayak that I had for last several years. I learn to role in this kayak, use for day trips to multi day trips last week to 9 days long including Desolation Sounds, BGI, Gods Pocket, Johnstone Strait, Kyuquot to Nootka Sounds. Also went on Surf at Ucluelet in this kayak.

This kayak have a soft chime with bit of a rocker and a keel strip can handle any waters.

    Please see the specifications below.

    Hello to all 239 members!

I’m echoing Esmeralda’s gentle reminder, but more bluntly.

Our AGM quorum is 10% or 24 members.

We have only 28 members pre-registered.

Can we please boost that to 40 or so, to give some cushion to account for no-shows, connection problems, traffic snarls and domestic emergencies?

We wouldn’t want to have to re-schedule our AGM for another time now, would we??

Please help your club with this one! Our hard-working volunteers deserve it!

Deadline to register is 6:30 pm and you cannot sign in at the AGM start time of 7:30 unless you already have the special Zoom url, which will be (or has already been) sent only to those registered.
