This deplorable parking situation has been this way since last year or earlier and I wrote to DWV to complain about it, but with no result. At first I thought (generously) that it might be COVID-related because some other shoreline parking was getting heavier use due to the pandemic, but they say that’s not the case here and it is not temporary.

It is not just that an overnight trip is now more difficult, but even a shortish day trip is a problem unless you wander off to those more distant streets.

One consolation is that at lest it is still better than Lion’s Bay public parking!

Not sure if this information has made the rounds yet, but this is an FYI for folk who have launched from Batchelor Cove in West Vancouver.

There is no longer any overnight parking on Dufferin Avenue (unless you know a resident on the street and can obtain a parking pass from them). Overnight is defined as midnight to 7 am. The daytime parking rules (7 am to midnight) limit parking to 3 hours.

The no parking signs extend all the way back to the corner at Marine Drive.

Now for the good news. At the west end of Batchelor Cove, there are stairs that ascend to street level on Marine Drive. For approximately 100 meters at the top of the stairs (extending roughly NE), overnight parking is available. That is, there are no signs prohibiting parking in any way.

All of the above is based on my experience this weekend, unloading/loading my kayak at the turn-around on Dufferin Ave, then parking where I described. It requires some faith in humanity to leave your gear on the beach to park your car, but it is doable.

In related news, Apodaca is a very nice park to visit. Well done Nick and volunteers who cut the trails and made the beach inviting. Do visit the park when you get the chance!

My short-notice request for help in Howe Sd  for Friday 17 June didn’t get a response, but I’m trying now for Monday 20 June. The tides are more favourable, so a later start is feasible – say 08:30 am at Squamish ramp.

This is to move lumber and materials from Tantalus to Islet View and put some of it in storage in Squamish.

Day trip in open boat. Need pfd, lunch, work & rain clothes. If someone has a pickup truck, SKABC will pay your fuel costs – enables carrying lumber across Squamish more easily than on my boat trailer.

in Howe Sd we finished at Tantalus and need to move out the surplus lumber before someone thinks it is free firewood. We also need to move hardware and some tools to Islet View, the next platform work site. In addition some unused lumber sits at Zorro Bay and we should remove to be used elsewhere. I’m planning an early start 7 am Squamish to finish by about 1 pm if all goes well. Travel in small open boat.

Bring PFD, rain jacket, work clothes, lunch. Rubber boots or work/hiking boots. Gloves. Could be cold and wet.

Thanks for  your reply Jennifer! It would be great to meet another lover of Gitchegoomi, and thanks for this lead. It is a bit of a drive, but I will definitely check it out. It might be a great option and my friends here tell me that we need to leave the north shore sometimes, so there’s that… lol.

Hi Gunilla, I’d suggest using a cart and walking on the Langdale ferry with your kayak. At the other end, roll up to the bus loop then turn sharp right into the parking lot and find the start of the beach trail immediately to the right. The trail has been improved and there is a lovely sheltered sand beach to launch off.

This would be a reliable and lower-risk way to get to where you are going. The crossing to Gambier is 1 NM. Your destination is only about 1.5 NM beyond that, from what I can tell on your map, so about 1 hr total from your launch.

Parking at HSB is the disadvantage of this route, but Lions Bay parking is as bad or worse and a much longer and more serious paddle.

I don’t recommend that you paddle alone, but if this is something you are used to doing and you take all the standard precautions, it is what I’d do without hesitation.

Would you be paddling from the Vancouver side? I parked at porteau once and paddled across via anvil. We left very early to avoid wind. The waves can get big even after 10-11. It’s a lovely paddle!

I’m an intermediate paddler with paddle canada 2, and I would not do that crossing alone. I brought a radio and wore immersion gear. The winds can pick up fast so best to be prepared.

if I was paddling alone I’d consider ferrying to langdale and kayaking from there. It’s a shorter crossing and still lovely.

I am going to a yoga retreat on Gambier Island June 20-24 on the southwest side of the island (see map below). I would like to paddle over and was hoping that there would be a couple of paddlers who would be interested in accompanying me over on the 20th and on the way back on the 24th. Ian might be able to join, but the retreat is all-female, so he will not be staying:)

It seems there is a lot of experience of paddling to Gambier so I’m looking for advice. Where would be the best place to park the car and to launch from? How long time would you guesstimate that it would take? It looks like it would be about 15km if one starts from Lion’s bay. Anything, in particular, to keep in mind? It doesn’t look like an advanced paddle, but I’m still learning how to plan and assess sea paddles so any advice is most welcome!! /Gunilla
