Last Sunday I paddled Howe Sound and we saw a group of 3 Orcas. (SE coast of Boywer). Does anyone know if they are still around?

It was pretty cool. We saw the group of about 6 boats and knew immediately why so paddled over to join them. There were also numerous people on shore, who probably had a better view. The whale watching boats were very respectful and approached slowly and kept their distance. Some of the power boats approached too fast but also kept their distance. Only 1 SUP approached too close. We need to remember that even if we are silent, they are still aware of our presence and we need to keep away. I find it very difficult to judge distance on the water, but keeping the same distance as the whale watchers seems ok, and try not to surround them. We want them to keep coming back!

So happy to hear that you got to experience and see the whales last weekend.

I have no idea if they are still around but my friend’s kids posted a video of the very same 3 orca’s at Bowyer on Sunday. My fiend has a cabin on Bowyer so they were out in a dingy at the time and those whales came within 2 meters of their little boat.  It’s still my goal this summer to see orca’s while out paddling!!

I guess I know where I’m paddling this weekend!
