Don and I are planning to do a day paddle around Anvil Island with a possible stop on Gambier. Leaving Porteau Cove midmorning. Contact us if you are interested in coming along.

Have fun tomorrow. It looks like the winds will be light and there will be no surprises. As for our reccie on the Fraser, I found a new website for tides on the Fraser, mainly for fishers and there is a tide station right on Barnston Island, our destination. We will be able to very accurately predict the best course for our day trip. Our reccie served its purpose and we learned some things along the way.

    Cheers,

    Heather.

I’d like to go, I’m thinking it will take us about 5 hours, 25 km distance divided by about 5 km / hour we should be on the water at 10:00 am. Your thoughts?

Thanks for the word of warning, Heather. Yes, we definitely aim to be back before 5. It’s sounds like you had a stressful end to your Fraser River trip. I’m glad it worked out alright in the end.

    Hi Don and Lynda,

I can’t come tomorrow but I want to warn you that if for any reason you are delayed, you should be sure you’ll be back before 5. I know how experienced and careful you are but I want to tell you that Iveta and I almost got caught out when we did a reconnaissance trip on the 17th on the Fraser. On the way back to the launch site the current was quite strong against us and slowed us down to the point that we had to paddle really hard to get back to Derby Reach before it was dark. The temperature plummeted as soon as the sun went down and by the time we had the boats loaded it was dusk and really cold. It was 4:50. The gates of the park were closing at 5. If we had not made it back before the gates closed, it would have become a police incident. That’s the way it has to be. If the ranger finds some empty cars with no owners, he/she has to call the police and they instigate a search. I know this for a fact because it happened to some friends and I when we got delayed on the Hanes Crossover hike a number of years ago.

It’ll be a really nice day tomorrow and I wish I could join you. Have a fun and safe trip!

    Heather.

    Hi John,

Yes, tomorrow, the 27th. I thought I had added a reply specifying that, but it looks like it didn’t post.

Hi Linda, I’m assuming you are paddling Monday January 27th?
