When: May 3, 2025 until May 4, 2025
Location: Galiano Island
The Weather Course will teach you the basic skills and knowledge to make a go or no-go decision for a kayak launch based on the weather. It will also allow you to plan and modify your course based on local and incoming weather and wave conditions.
The course is based out of Montague Harbour Campground on Galiano Island in the Southern Gulf Islands.
Prerequisites: Participants must be able to perform a wet exit, self-rescue, assisted rescue, and paddling in windy conditions. Kayaks must have bulkheads or flotation, deck lines and watertight hatches.
Course Format: Overnight course combines kayaking, camping and learning. Course material will be provided onsite and instruction will take place outdoors. There’s a covered site in case of inclement weather. The course runs Saturday and Sunday.
Camping Information: SKABC has booked the Montague Harbour provincial park group campsite for Saturday May 3rd, 2025.
Items Required: Overnight kayak camping equipment, food for yourself and contribution to a potluck on Sasturday May 3. There’s a BBQ, running water for dishes, woodstove, a raccoon cache and fire pit on site. Note. You must bring briquettes if you plan on using the BBQ.
Visit the Trip Checklist to help you determine what you need to bring for the trip.
Registration: Registration is open. Once your registration is confirmed by the instructor, you will receive a password to complete your registration from the course coordinator along with further information about the course.
Registration Deadline: Given BC Ferries 8 day cancellation policy, the course will be cancelled at SKABC’s discretion if the minimum number of 6 participants have not registered and paid by noon on Wednesday April 23, 2025 so those with reservations can make their cancellations.
Transportation: It is each participant’s responsibility to get themselves to the course location. The course coordinator will communicate with participants to organize carpooling and the pot luck dinner on Saturday night. Carpooling is a great way to be kind to the environment and to minimize the cost of gas and ferry where applicable.
