Safe Surf Launching and Landing Course

When: September 28, 2018 until September 30, 2018

This course will give you the basic skills and knowledge to land and launch safely on surf beaches and increase your confidence in rough water. This is not a course on surfing.

In this course you will learn how to safely launch and land on surf beaches, by learning the following specific skills:

  • Rigging your kayak and then yourself for surf travel in safety
  • Choosing the safest approach when landing on a surf beach
  • Positioning your kayak on the wave when landing
  • carrying out a high brace into a wave after broaching
  • Handling a waterlogged kayak and swimming your boat in after a wet exit
  • Sequence of landing when you are leading a party
  • Choosing the safest and easiest approach when you launch
  • Using rips and run-outs
  • Incidents that could occur and how to handle them

Prerequisites:
Must be an intermediate paddler with good bracing skills
Must have practiced wet-exit and re-entry techniques this year

Course Format:  This is a 3 day course, beginning Friday, September 28th , ending Sunday, September 30th, 2018. Participants are expected to board the 7:45 sailing from Tsawwassen or the 8:30 sailing from Horseshoe Bay and arrive in Tofino shortly after lunch. The course will start promptly at 3.00pm at the cabin. The first day consist of introductions and theory. This will allow us to maximize our time on the water with a full day on Saturday and additional time for practice on Sunday morning. The course will end on Sunday, Oct 1st at 1.00pm with a quick debrief, allowing participants to catch an early ferry home.

Include prior experience, in surf or on the ocean, and type of boat you will be bringing (must be a suitable ocean boat). As soon as we have confirmed you have the necessary pre-requisites, you will receive an email with payment instructions to complete your course registration. (Register by Aug 26th so we know if the course is a go!)

Additional Costs: The course fee does not include accommodation, transportation and food. Participants must consider additional fees as follows:

Accommodation: Based on feedback from prior courses, we have reserved a cabin at Mackenzie Beach Resort, which sleeps 8 persons. The cost will be divided between the participants and instructors; it will vary based on the number of participants. Best case scenario (if we have 8 participants) the total cost will be between $150 and $175 per person. We will not run the course with less than 6 participants. Registrations will close on September 15th (2 weeks prior to the course date).

Ferry & ground transportation: Carpooling is advised.

Food:  Participants are responsible for the cost and preparation of their meals. Breakfast and dinners will be consumed at the cabin; everyone is on their own for breakfast, dinners will be potlucks. Participants are responsible for packing lunches and snacks to take with them in their kayaks.

Special Note:  Spouses/partners are welcome to join us for shared meals at the house (breakfasts and dinners), however please note that spouses/partners cannot join the group for lunch nor for any portion of the course (theory or practice).
