Navigation Course – Registration page

When: April 20, 2024 until April 21, 2024

Location:  Galiano Island

This course will teach participants the fundamentals of navigation, including using charts and compasses. You will learn how to follow a course to a destination and find your way home again with confidence. Tides and currents will also be explained.

The course is based out of Montague Harbour Campground on Galiano Island in the Southern Gulf Islands.

Prerequisite: You must be able to perform a wet exit, re-entry and assisted rescue.

Course Format:  Overnight course combines kayaking, camping and learning.  Course material will be provided onsite and instruction will take place outdoors. There’s a covered site in case of inclement weather.

Camping Information: SKABC has booked the Montague Harbour Provincial Park group campsite for Friday April 19 and Saturday April 20 nights.  Participants who wish to arrive Friday are welcome to do so.  The instructors will be arriving on Friday April 19.

Items Required:  Overnight Kayak camping equipment, food for yourself, contribution to a potluck on Saturday April 20.
There’s a BBQ, running water for dishes, woodstove, a raccoon cache and fire pit on site.  Note. You must bring briquettes if you plan on using the BBQ.

You will also need:

  • A hiker’s compass with transparent baseplate. Silva or Suunto models are good options
  • Chart # 3463 – Strait of Georgia; Southern Portion
  • 2024 Tide and Current Tables

Transportation:  It is each participant’s responsibility to get themselves to the course location.  The course coordinator will email the group so that all participants have the email addresses of the others attending the course.  This will enable each of you to reach out to the group or an individual to organize carpooling.  Carpooling is a great way to be kind to the environment and to minimize the cost of gas and ferry where applicable.

Registration Fee: $85 including camping         Limit:  8 participants  (minimum 6)

Ferry Bookings and Car pooling are strongly recommend:
Arrival:  if you do not arrive on Friday, you must catch the 8:55 am ferry from Tsawwassen to Sturdies Bay.
Return:  the course runs on Sunday. Please book the 7:45 pm ferry back to Tsawwassen.

Refund policy: If a participant cancels, refunds are available if another member is able to fill the vacant spot.
